For a few years now, Kesha has disappeared from music. Most people probably haven't noticed that she's gone. It's normal for musicians to take a break from music to focus on life and then make a huge comeback. Well, Kesha has been focusing on something, but it wasn't her choice to stop making music.
Kesha has been fighting to keep making music because her music producer, Dr. Luke, has filed a lawsuit for being in breach of her contract. How is she in breach of her contact? She filed her own lawsuit in October of 2014 against Dr. Luke for assault and battery, harassment, gender violence, civil harassment, unfair business and intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress. How did this all happen? To understand the whole story, we have to go back to when Kesha released her first song, "Tik Tok."
Ten years ago, Kesha was 18-years-old and dropped out of school to pursue her music career. She was discovered by Dr. Luke in Nashville, Tennessee, and he made her into "Ke$ha." She was on top of the charts with songs like "Tik Tok," "We R Who We R," and "Your Love is My Drug." Everything was looking great for Ke$ha, but the songs hid what was really happening behind the scenes.
With Kesha being so young in the industry, she was susceptible to manipulation. Dr. Luke took advantage of this and gave her gamma-hydroxybutyrate. This drug made her unconscious and while she was out of it, Dr. Luke would have her way with her. If that wasn't enough, Dr. Luke also verbally attacked her, comparing her to a "fat refrigerator" and forcing her to take illegal drugs to scare her into giving him complete control over her music and TV documentary series. Kesha wrote more than 70 songs for her last album "Warrior" that Dr. Luke would ban her from releasing.
In January of 2014, Kesha entered rehab for an eating disorder that she received from the stress of Dr. Luke's harassment. After being in rehab for two months, she finally found the courage to stand up for herself. In October of 2014, her doctors told her that working with Dr. Luke has the potential to be life threatening to Kesha, so she took her record label to court. She filed the lawsuit on Dr. Luke and has been fighting for over a year now for her freedom. Kesha wants to void her recording agreements and let her to enter new contracts with different companies. All she wants is to be free of her abuser.
However, Dr. Luke wasn't going to take this lawsuit sitting down. He filed his own lawsuit against Kesha, saying that she breached her contract and that she's just trying to get out of her current contract. As of right now, Kesha cannot sing or make music until a decision is made about the lawsuits. Her entire career is in the balance. If she loses this lawsuit, she will be trapped in her current contract with her abuser. All Kesha can do is pray and hope that the court sets her free. Her final court decision will be given on February 19, 2016, after being postponed due to the weather. Since the postponement, Kesha has released a YouTube video of her thanking her fans for her support and singing "Amazing Grace," since she cannot sing her own music.
