I've known that I wanted to be a teacher ever since I first went to my mom's classroom to help her set it up for the new school year. I'm at the age where I hear, "What's your major?" or "What do you plan on doing after college?" at least once a day. When I tell people I'm an education major, the first thing out of their mouths is usually along the lines of "Bless your heart" or "You won't make a lot of money." Then comes "What grade do you want to teach?" When people hear my answer of pre-K, they look at me like I'm crazy. People always ask me why in the world I want to be a teacher and why I want to teach such young children. Here are my top reasons why being a teacher is one of the best jobs in the world.
1. The children teach you just as much as you teach them.
You get to have these children come into your life and teach you just as much as you teach them. The children teach you how to have patience, be kind, and that you never know what is happening in others' lives. Remember that.
2. The funny stuff little children say.
Kids say the darndest things!
3. You are there for major milestones in the classroom.
Whether it's spelling, reading, or math, you will be there when the lightbulb goes off and they finally understand what you have been working with them on. Seeing their little faces light up is one of the coolest things I've seen.
4. Bad day? You have over 20 kids to make you feel better.
Bad days happen, but when kids run and give you hugs or make you laugh, you forget about the bad day you are having and just remember how blessed you are to be in a classroom of such precious children.
5. Summer break
While all my non-teacher finds will be working, I will have my summers off. I will have all summer to go on vacation, lay around, and plan my classroom and lessons for the upcoming school year. This in itself is a awesome award.
6. No money? Worth it.
All the points I have mentioned before make it a little better to know that I won't be making a lot of money. While I won't be making a lot of money doing something that I love with all my heart, I couldn't see myself doing anything else.
Teaching isn't for everyone, and that's OK. It takes a strong person with a huge heart to do it. Teaching is a selfless job in my eyes. Next time you talk to an education major or teacher, instead of saying something negative, say something positive because where would you be without your awesome teachers growing up?
