I’m sure as an American citizen, you’ve seen the movement called #blacklivesmatter floating around. Several fights have been breaking out over injustices and people feel torn between their loyalties for their own race or standing up for something they believe in.
After several accounts of scanning my newsfeed on Facebook, I have gathered the idea of what people think #blacklivesmatter means, and how it affects them. So, what do you think it means?
In our society, altogether, we have created the idea of race. People of a race tend to feel a strong sense of loyalty around that considering it’s a social norm to be within the own bounds of your race. Days after the event of Philando Castile, many people have been raging, whether it’s to protect their local cops or stand up for what they think is a case of police brutality. As a person of another ethnic who grew up in a typical white neighborhood, what I made up out of the meaning of this movement is completely the opposite of what other people view it as.
I’m sure you’ve heard of people saying who support #blacklivesmatter are racist, or that they hate cops, or even that they’re violent.
Maybe, or maybe it means the unity of people. Maybe it means a peaceful protest to change the societal norms.
In the 1970’s, a new counterculture started. Or known as the hippie movement. This movement consisted of people coming together to make a change even though it was looked down upon society
I personally believe #blacklivesmatter is another counterculture that’s trying to fight the idea of police brutality because let’s face it, there will always be racial profiling happening
As a U.S. citizens, all people are given the basic constitutional rights. But what about the subtle racism? The typical racial profiling, people of different ethics targeted more, the idea of someone who is white with a criminal record being called over someone else just because they had a typical “black” name. We see them in our society, but don’t notice them due to the fact it’s simply not happening to us. That’s the whole idea of black lives matter because the people who are still subtly put down want to fight back. They want a change, to see a difference in society. So what does black lives matter really mean? It’s a counterculture trying to make their change in the world, regardless of all the bad media and the people who take the movement too far.
Not all of us are bad, we just want to see a change in this world so we can get one step closer to peace. Violence will not achieve our goals, as Martin Luther King showed. Fight the power with peace, or don’t fight at all.
