There is absolutely nothing in this world that will give is as much joy when we worship it than Jesus does. We often fall into idol worship on things that we think will make us happy or change our lives. Money, people, job titles, technology, beauty, attention, safety and our own sinful desires are just a few of the things that we often worship, and may not even realize it.
These various things start to consume us if we let them. What could seem like just another detail about our lives could end up in a new level, harming us without even knowing it.
"Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands. They have mouths, but do not speak; eyes, but do not see. They have ears, but do not hear; noses, but do not smell. They have hands, but do not feel; feet, but do not walk; and they do not make a sound in their throat. Those who make them become like them; so do all who trust in them." Psalm 115:4-8
When we worship anything or anyone besides our God, we never get anything good out of it. Not only are we lacking in glorifying Him, but we are ignoring how much these things hurt us. I used to be terrible at not worshipping money. I figured out why, though. I worshiped money because I wanted to find security. I only ran towards the jobs that would pay me enough money. I am still to this day very good at saving money, even when I actually need something. But instead, I now have a new perspective of money. I feel that I have money because God has called me to give in places I never thought I would give. That brings me more joy than having a ton of money and thinking I am secure and safe. However, security and safety can only come through the power of Jesus and I had to learn that.
“To whom will you compare me? Who is my equal? Some people pour out their silver and gold and hire a craftsman to make a god from it. Then they bow down and worship it! They carry it around on their shoulders, and when they set it down, it stays there. It can’t even move! And when someone prays to it, there is no answer. It can’t rescue anyone from trouble." Isaiah 46:5-7
The first step is revealing to yourself what you worship. Why should we worship something more than the source it came from?
