I’m so sick and tired of everyone asking what I’m going to do after graduation like it is the end all be all of my existence. There are so many aspects of life that have nothing to do with your career that our pivotal to your fulfillment.
We live in a society that is obsessed with compartmentalizing people. As soon as we hear that someone is pregnant we ask if it is a boy or a girl? Not because it has any effect on our own lives, but because we feel calmer knowing everything fits into a pretty little box. We do the same thing when it comes to careers. People will bombard one another with questions until they figure out the specific niche he or she wants to be apart of. For college students this often means lying or telling them that he or she doesn’t know. People’s career choices often have no effect on other peoples lives-so why are we so obsessed with them?
What if a person’s being does not fit neatly into the box? Individuals have so many complexities. Not everyone fits perfectly into specific tracks.
Someone’s career path is not the end all be all of his or her life. First of all it can change and evolve as the person does. Secondly, there is so much more to life than your job. To me what matters most in life is what happens when the workday is over. The relationships you make, the places you go, and how it all makes you feel.
What do I want to be? Happy?
