To millennials; we live in an unprecedented time of self-discovery during the age of technology. To everyone; I'm sure we have all thought of this at some point: what do I want to be when I grow up? This question has been on my mind lately, partly due to time constraints and partly do to actually curiosity.
So, what does someone do if they don't know what they want?
Damn right it's not that simple. How does you figure out what your passion is, out of a plethora of possibilities? Is the answer to try everything and anything and hope it'll stick? Does the answer lie within the results from the countless career and personality tests you took? Or do you focus on what your hobbies are and run with it?
I was volunteering one day at a park, and my team leader was talking about his profession (a professor at FIT). He asked me about what I do, and I told him that I was a college student, majoring in blah, blah, blah...and still trying to figure out what I want to do in life. Mind you, in terms of age he's like in the senior bracket. He told me that even at his age, he still didn't know what he wanted to do in life, that nobody really knows.
After hearing so many people say that they already know what they wanted to be, you can imagine that this was a big relief to hear. Life is not cut and dry, it's not an assembly line, and it's not predictable (as much as I sometime wish it was). What this guy said helps me out when I feel like I haven't done enough self-discovery, or when I feel clueless or utterly depressed about the future.
It's important to remember to have just a sliver of optimism when you try to tackle the big obstacle that is life. Read your favorite book, or take a bike ride, or look at a picture of the cutest baby in the land. I try to do these things to remind myself that the good things in life will still be there rooting for you to accomplish your goals, no matter how big or small.
