Like many kids, I loved Disney as I was growing up. I spent countless hours watching Disney films and playing with Disney toys. Whenever I went to the pool, I would clench my legs together and wiggle around in the water pretending I was a mermaid like Ariel. I was always drawn to Disney princess movies, and I wanted to be just like the princesses, but not because they were princesses. I wanted to be like them because they were strong and fearless, and the princesses gave me a model of how to live my life as a child, and as an adult today.
Yes, Disney movies are targeted toward a young audience, but Disney princesses can teach children and adults important values. Snow White taught me to be accepting of all walks of life, especially those that are different from you. Cinderella taught me to work hard, and treat others with kindness even when they do not deserve it. Aurora taught me to find beauty wherever you are, whether it be a small cottage in the woods or a massive palace. Ariel taught me to follow my dreams, even when those close to you do not approve or understand. Belle showed me that there is good in everyone, even if it is masked by anger or harshness. Jasmine taught me to treat others as royalty, regardless of who they are. Pocahontas showed me that if you give others a chance, they can teach you things you never knew possible. Mulan taught me women could excel and make a difference in a field dominated by men. Tiana showed me that when you have a goal, a strong work ethic is the number one way to achieve that goal. Rapunzel taught me that you have to take risks to reach your goal, and that nothing comes easily. Merida showed me that family comes first, and the bonds you have with your family will never break. Anna taught me that true love is not necessarily with a significant other, but can be found within family. Finally, Elsa showed me that love and trust are essential in strong relationships, and running away from problems does not solve them.
Thanks to the lessons I have learned from the Disney princesses, I am kind, determined, and I will work as hard as possible to achieve my goals. These princesses taught me that no dream is too big, that kindness is possible even in the darkest of situations, and that magic really does exist. I have taken the lessons I've learned from the Disney princesses and put them to work in my own life. No, I can't sing or communicate with woodland creatures, but I can lend a helping hand or take the time to talk to someone who is lonely. So thank you, Disney princesses, for making me a better person. I can't wait to see what Moana can teach me.
