What Coming Out Taught Me

Coming out isn't as scary as I thought.

There comes a point in your life where you can’t keep your biggest secret in any longer. If you do, you’ll emotionally burst. This “secret” makes you who you are as a person. You knew this about you your whole life. You just can’t lie to yourself anymore and when you finally come to terms with it, and admit it to people, it feels like freedom that you’ve been waiting for your whole life.

1. You can’t hide from yourself.

No matter how hard you try, you can’t deny who you are to yourself. If you keep denying, you’ll never be happy. You’ll never learn to be happy with yourself, especially; and that’s the most important thing in your life. Never keep yourself from happiness. Have respect for yourself and well-being

2. Being different is never a bad thing.

Being different is pretty awesome. You have different tastes, experience and perspectives. In a group of friends, they are probably all straight; what’s a friend group if one of them isn’t gay?

3. If they love you, they’ll accept you.

Not being accepted or loved after making this bold move is the most terrifying thing. The worst situations runs through your head and start to convince yourself that it’s the wrong thing but no, keeping it bottled up thinking you’re wrong is the wrong thing. Let yourself soar and be free.

4. The monsters turned out to be just trees.

Once this secret’s out, you’ll feel brand new because there is nothing tying you down anymore, nothing to keep you from your happiness and most importantly, you don’t have to hide from yourself anymore. The fear disappears. You’re in the clear and every fear you’ve ever had about something you’ve worried about for so long evaporates into the air like it wasn’t even there

5. Pride is confidence.

Once you’re out and in the clear, your confidence and pride comes out right along with you in flying colors. You won’t let anything or anyone come between you and your new freedom. When people ask “how do you feel? How did you do it? I’m so proud of you!” It gives you a feeling that you’ve never had before. A “cloud 9” feeling. You tear up, you get emotional, you feel so emotional and free. You had the courage to accept that you were different and now, you couldn’t be happier.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
