Bill Watterson is a genius.
I discovered this when my aunt sent me the original "Calvin and Hobbes" comic collection book for one of my early birthdays. Little did she know that this would result in my brother and I spending endless days reading, re-reading, and dying from laughter from the stories inside. Over the years, we have managed to gather just about all of the comics and have read them so many times we can quote many of the comics from memory.
For those unfamiliar, Calvin and Hobbes is a journey following an eccentric boy named Calvin, and his lovable tiger Hobbes. Together, they take on the world in the most hilarious way possible.
No matter how low I am feeling, Calvin and Hobbes has always been able to make me laugh, and teach me something in the process. Here are some of the truths I have gleaned through Watterson's beautiful world of Calvin and Hobbes:
1. Mothers deserve more than one day a year of appreciation! (Happy Belated Mother's Day!)
Ah, the sweet words of a child that make it all worthwhile.
2. You don't always have to color inside the lines.
In fact, it's usually more fun not to!
3. Silence can speak volumes.
Everyone knows the mom look. Everyone has received the mom look. The mom look trumps all.
4. Teachers deserve all the awards.
I think I can speak for all of us when I say I have been tempted to say something along these lines on multiple occasions.5. Being 'cool' is really not all that its cracked up to be.
This is the most accurate depiction of 'coolness' I have ever seen. And honestly, who wants that?6. Love is weird.
I'm not sure how we manage to equate these two together. Clearly brains are weird too.7. There will always be a family member like this. Always.
8. Sometimes we need to refocus ourselves.
We all need a Hobbes in our life. And a big sunny field.9. The best things in life don't come in packages.
Don't take your friends for granted- they are what make life worthwhile.10. At the end of the day, the good outweighs the bad.
This has always been one of my favourite strips. Similarly to what I wrote in my previous article, it illustrates that there can always be something good found in every day!
