First of all, lets just say having a younger sibling can be a challenge sometimes. One day you are trying to change in your room in private, the next your brother or sister thinks it’s funny to barge in your room, screaming at the top of their lungs. No one said having a little sibling would be a walk in the park all of the time, but it sure is the best thing in the world.
Being the older sibling, you have a sense of responsibility, you look after and care for your brother or sister, and make sure no harm comes their way -- and trust me, if it does, we will be the first one to know. They look up to you, and ask for advice, because at that time you were going through exactly what they are going through now. So, you just take over and explain. In a way, you are kind of like their superhero, because you keep all of your notes and you had the same teachers they have now. So, there is no way possible they could fail a class. Whenever they feel scared to walk in their room alone, you are right there to check it out to make sure no monsters are under the bed.
For me, I love being an older sibling; I enjoy showing my younger sibling all of the cools things I used to do, or show them how the older Disney movies are 'where it’s at.' To teach them it is OK to stand up for yourself and do what makes you happy, because in the end all you can do is rely on yourself. I am able to be there every step of the way, helping with things my parents can’t and to cheer them on at every sporting event. There is so much joy that comes along with being an older sibling, and even sometimes you learn something from your little brother or sister, too. They can teach you things sometimes you didn’t know were possible, because with a young mind everything is possible, if you just do it.
So, to all of the wonderful older siblings out there: appreciate the time you have with your younger brother or sister. Because, one day, you will be older, doing big kid things, and you won’t have the precious time you have now with them. Always look after them, and have fun when they play Christmas music in July.
