What Being An Aunt Means

Being an aunt is like a roller coaster you never want to get off of.

What Being An Aunt Means
Katie McMahon

The day my first niece was born I was only four years old. Four! I had no idea what being an aunt meant, I just thought it was like a new person to play with, but what it turned out to be is a lifetime of laughter and staying up all night talking to her. Now here we are in 2016, and I am proudly the aunt of three beautiful nieces and two handsome nephews, all ranging from 9-months old to almost 14 (Don’t worry, I have two older brothers). Watching five little lives grow up is something irreplaceable.

Here is what Being an aunt means:

Babysitting a lot, but enjoying every minute

Going shopping and buying clothes for them, rather than yourself

Embarking on Starbuck’s runs with the older ones (and getting the barista to hold the coffee, cause Aunt Joy is not ready for three kids hyper on coffee at once)

Taking trips to the amusement park and always having a riding partner

Changing dirty diapers often

Feeding a baby and having your arm fall asleep

Cuddling a sleeping baby (cause if that doesn’t melt your heart, I don’t know what will)

Talking about boyfriends and gossip, even if you are years apart

Taking Trips to the zoo, and instead of looking at the animals, you look at them, because the look on their face is far more beautiful/handsome than the animals

Enjoying Christmas a little more, cause Santa gets to visit your house again

Playing Peek-a-boo for what seems like forever

Watching Elmo at 6 a.m.

Traveling a handful of hours to see them as much as you can

Spoiling them with anything they want, because the really do have the cutest “puppy-dog” face

Playing football and basketball, even though you are not very good at it

Racing against them, and always letting them win

Teaching them how to say “taco” (because that is honestly the most important word in the dictionary)

Jamming out in the car to all the latest songs, and watching their always fabulous dance moves

Missing them like crazy when you don’t get to see them at least once a month

Sharing your food with them, because what you have always looks better than what they have

Sharing your heart with five little munchkins

Loving them as much as you possibly can

And Lastly, never being able to thank your Siblings and Siblings-in-Law enough for giving you the greatest honor on earth, as being able to be an aunt

Being an Aunt has taught me patience, but mostly to always be thankful for what you have. Even when my niece and I are so alike we argue, I still love that I have someone who is so similar to me. It is not always easy to be an aunt, but it sure is worth it. They say you don’t know what you have till it is gone, but I know what I have, five amazing nieces and nephews, and I never want lose the relationship we have.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
