One thing prevalent among 20-year-olds is that we have no clue what we want to do. Mind you, we may have a career in mind, but do we know what we will do with that degree? You have your dream job in mind, but did you know only 30% of people actually ever have their dream job? So keep in mind that your dream job might just be only a dream.
So while you're going through the motions in life, it's okay to not know what it is you want to do. Roughly speaking, the average person switches careers 3 times in their life. So just because that job has nothing to do with your degree and they're still offering you a job, just take it, because who knows you may enjoy it.
For roughly 20 years of our lives we've been institutionalized to conform, all the while trying to find out who we are and what we want to do. So it's to be expected that we feel confused and hesitant with the rest of our life. In schooling we are told what to do, how to do things and when those things are due, but outside of schooling we start to feel lost in the world with the lack of authority. It's understandable that the unknown is overwhelming and not appealing to some.
Throughout our lives people have told us to do what you are passionate about, that we should aim to love our jobs, but loving your job doesn't mean you'll love your life. In today's society there is a large monetary gap between some careers and that in return leads people to strive to be doctors, lawyers, business people. There is this pressure to have a job that is a 'real' job. a job that supports yourself wholeheartedly.
Some people have a passion from grade school and they continue through high school and college and get their dream job, but many of us feign a passion to appease are parents, to appease society. I've had many friends who have told me that the major they chose is because their parents have that major, or because it's a high paying job. It can be sad to see how many people don't live their lives but allow their parents to live their lives for them.
So take a step back and look at what it is you're doing, what it is that you want to do and what you will do to get there. Nothing is worse than ending up in a job that makes you miserable while you could be doing something you enjoy. You may not know what it is you want to do, but just keep doing things you enjoy and are passionate about and you may figure out just what it is you want to do.
