I never thought I'd be a sorority girl. Going into college, all I knew about Greek life was what I'd seen in movies and on television, and therefore didn't have a very good outlook on the whole system.
Then I got to school, friendless and completely alone, and knew something had to change. My friend at the time told me that going through recruitment, even if I didn't accept a bid, would change everything and I'd meet tons of new people. So I sent in my entry fee and signed up for the weekend that would forever change my life.
I went through recruitment completely open, having no sense of what any of the sororities could potentially have in store for me. And when I opened my bid from Alpha Gamma Delta, I knew that I'd found my home.
Alpha Gam has completely changed my life in the short time I've been a part of it. It's introduced me to some of my best friends and some of the overall greatest people I've ever come across. It's showed me the importance of giving back to my community and how sisterhood can completely turn a bad day around. It's proven to me the value of having sisters who always have your back.
The women in my sorority are some of the greatest people I've ever met. Every single person is such a genuine soul and I couldn't say a bad thing about a single one of them. Walking across campus and saying hello to dozens of girls never fails to brighten my day. There's always someone willing to get coffee or dinner or study or just sit and talk for hours on end.
Sorority life is nothing like what I've seen depicted in the media. You're not "paying" for your friends -- these women love you for you and nothing else. It's not all about crazy parties or hooking up with boys. It's about the little things -- the retreats, the study parties, the chapter meetings. It's about finding the people who genuinely love and care about you, no matter what. It's about the laughs, the tears, and everything in between.
Alpha Gam introduced me to my roommate and best friend, someone I now can't imagine life without. My Big became one of my absolute favorite people and we don't go a day without talking, even though she's now fifteen hours away. It brought me a family away from home, people I can always count on to be there, even when I'm at my lowest.
Alpha Gam showed me my purpose and proved to me that I have worth that surpasses anything else. It gave me my place in this world and proved to me that what I do makes a difference in at least one person's life. It taught me the true meaning of living with purpose.
I can't wait to see where the next two years take me within Alpha Gam. Alpha Gamma Delta is truly my home away from home -- the thing I needed most when starting my college adventure. I'm so proud to be a sorority member, and even prouder to be a member of Alpha Gamma Delta.
