West Coast Slang Told By An East Coaster

Gnarly, dude.

West Coast Slang Told By An East Coaster

Coming to the West from New York is a ginormous change. Yes, it is still America, but the people here on the West Coast are completely different in a lot of ways. From the attitudes to the way they dress, it is an outrageous change. One of the things I have noticed the most is the lingo used by West Coasters is much different from New York or anything I have ever experienced living on the East Coast.

1. Hella

Here's what The Urban Dictionary has to say:

Hella: very, totally; lots of. N.B. Generally used in Northern California.

"That party was hella sketch."

"There was hella weed tho!"

I don't believe I have ever heard anyone in New York or anywhere else on the East Coast for that matter say hella. We say "mad" instead. That's mad far, that's mad weird. It just sounds so Californian, "hella."

2. Gnarly

The Urban Dictionary says:

Gnarly: slang term for something extreme. Used in bad and good cases. Originated from the word gnarled.

"That was a gnarly wreck man, that dudes head flew off."

"Did you see that new Local Motion board? It is gnarly."

On the East Coast, people make fun of the word "gnarly."

"Gnarly surfboard, dude."

Honestly, I did not think West Coasters even said gnarly, I thought it was just a joke of the stereotype of West Coasters type of thing. The first person I heard here that said "gnarly" I literally did LOL. I couldn't believe people actually said it.

3. Rad

According to The Urban Dictionary:

Rad: Slang and/or abbreviation for the word "radical."

"Our trip to the strip club was rad!"

Another surfer term, rad. When I think of this word, I think of Californian boys surfing on the beaches of Beverly Hills on 90210.

4. Hesh

And the Urban Dictionary definition is:

Hesh: A term derived from skateboarding culture. Usually used to describe someone unkempt and sometimes dirty in appearance. Will have facial hair more times than not along with tighter jeans.

"Holy sh*t! Did you see that dude's beard? That is one heshy dude!"

Skateboarding is not a big thing at all on the East Coast. It is very rare you see people just riding around through town or a city on their skateboards. On the West Coast, every other person I see is a skateboarder. With that, these "skateboard slangs" come in like the word "hesh." I originally thought people were saying "hash" like the marijuana. Still not really sure why this is a word.

And there you have it, a New Yorker telling the slang of a 19-year-old Californian.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
