Dear Buffalo,
As I begin my Canisius experience, and many return to continue theirs (Go Griffs!), I have a bone to pick with you. Come to think of it, I think the students of Niagara, UB, and Buff State have the same bone to pick; it's too damn hot.
Before we continue please, let me take a moment to say, I don't dislike you at all-- your wings are delicious, Canalside can be a lot of fun, Niagara Falls is pretty cool, and let's not forget your plethora of art galleries, theaters, and other artistic venues-- but on the weather side of things, you "fail to meet expectations" (as any Buffalo professor might very well put it). And what, you may ask, do I mean by this? Well as much as I hate to stereotype, you're a city known for cold temperatures and record snowfall, so logically, your summers shouldn't get all that hot. The fact that you're broiling students inside their un-airconditioned dorms and classroms just seems flawed, and contradictory to your very nature.
Now, yes, we do understand that you "don't actually control the weather within your borders," that "the issue is less heat and more humidity," and that "not having air-conditioning at college is a first world problem," but seriously, we're roasting and sweaty (not to mention that funky smell) and who else do we have to complain to but you? (Seriously, if you have an answer to that, please let us know so that something can be done about this heat).
Anyway, though, I'll back off. The truth is, there are a lot more important things to worry about than wanting ice and extra deodorant. We all need to get organized, catch up with teachers and friends, as well as make new acquaintances, and most importantly, devote our energies to having an overall great experience (a.k.a. get the most out of this year's tuition) even if that means losing half our body weight in sweat. The start of term is not a thing to be wasted, and soon enough, we know you'll be back to your cold and snowy antics.
So although we're still all hot and bothered (literally), let this be a farewell to the discussion, and a hello to the start of what will hopefully be a great semester.
Thanks for hearing the complaints,
Veronica Ward, on behalf of all the students of Buffalo.
P.S.
Seriously, though, all the stores are out of fans-- could you at least do something about that?
