A Weekend As A Fenway Security Guard

High five all of them, they deserve it

A Weekend As A Fenway Security Guard

When I was first offered this gig all I thought of it was a quick way to make money over the weekend. However, these security workers deal with a lottttt more than people give them credit for. I was posted by the entrance to the turf seating for the Kid Rock and Jason Aldean concert Friday and Saturday night. All I had to do was make sure the people walking passed me were turf seat ticket holders, which was stamped all over their tickets. But, a few things made me realize that this job is definitely not something to toss up as easy.

People are not always cooperative

All I asked each person as they passed was to see their ticket. Some would have it ready in hand, some would reluctantly dig through their pockets to grab it, and others would just push passed me. I am not a big girl, but little Long Islander me held her ground against the drunk men stumbling by. With each mean person we had getting in our faces, there were ten people who made us smile, so overall the night was funny.

College kids are not the only ones you'll see stumbling around

Living on campus I thought I had seen all of the level of drunkenness; oh but I was wrong. Everyone from my age and up was stumbling and slurring their way through Fenway, and I give them all credit for having the ability to not somehow injure themselves. Alcohol naturally brings fighting, falling, and cursing, which echoed through the hallways from 4 to 11:30. Having to control massive intoxicated crowds wasn't necessarily too easy, but it definitely brought around a lot of laughs.

You have to hold back your fangirl

Do you understand how hard it is to not scream when Thomas Rhett makes eye contact with you??? You're getting paid to keep everything in order, but how are you supposed to hold it together when A Thousand Horses are gathered directly next you. You can't, that's the only response.

People are appreciative of the smallest things

Since people were coming in and out of the turf seating often you start recognizing faces and of course picking your faves. This helped a ton when there were rushes during intermission because you could move the line quicker knowing that people were all set to go through. Also, you get a ton of high fives when people walk passed you, which is always a nice touch. A million compliments also will get thrown your way the nicer you are.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
