My oldest sister eloped over the summer, and this fall she had a wedding party to celebrate. A few people gave speeches and a couple of my siblings and I were going to say a few words as well. I, instead of saying something heartfelt, reverted (as I always do) to quoting 'The Office.'
This is the toast I gave:
“Webster's dictionary defines wedding as "the fusing of two metals with a hot torch." Well, you know something? I think you guys are two medals. Gold medals.”
This is the toast I should have given:
"Briana is an amazing and beautiful woman and an even better big sister. My whole life I’ve been told “you look just like Briana” and that was always and forever will be a huge compliment.
Not only have I wanted to look like Briana, but even more I’ve always wanted to be like her. Being the first daughter, she took on the role of second mom. Feeding us, dressing us, changing diapers, the list goes on. She was always there to take care of us and still is.
Strong is the word I think of when I think of her. She is dependable, confident, loving, and kind. Everything anyone could ever want in a wife.
She is also very patient. They both are. In fact, I was actually at their house the day before they got married. They, of course, didn’t tell anyone they were eloping (what would be the fun in that) so I had no idea what was going on.
My roommates had left me all alone for the weekend, so I was in need of some company and Briana and Aaron welcomed me with open arms into their home, even though they didn’t know when I would be leaving.
I had talked about staying another night and leaving on Monday (the day they had planned to head to the courthouse) and they were still willing to let me stay even though they had BIG plans. I think the main issue was they didn’t know how to politely tell me to leave.
I ended up leaving that night, and I’m sure they are both very thankful that I did. I think that story shows just how loving, kind, patient, and hospitable they both are. (p.s. I'm sorry for almost crashing your wedding).
I have never doubted for one moment that these two were meant to be. Even when I first met Aaron, he instantly fit right into our family.
Briana, you found some equally as weird, funny, quirky, nerdy, and loving as you. I am so excited to see you grow together in your marriage. I admire and love both of you so much.
I would just like to end by saying:
Webster's dictionary defines wedding as "the fusing of two metals with a hot torch." Well, you know something? I think you guys are two medals. Gold medals
Congratulations to the happy couple!"
