I Went A Day Without My Headphones And It Threw Everything Out Of Sync

I didn't realize how one little thing could throw me off.

Growing up I listened to music all the time; it was a daily ritual. When I say all the time I do mean all the time. I always had headphones in listening to my favorite music, and it seemed hard to pull myself away from that.

As well as music; I watch a lot of movies, TV shows and spend way too many hours watching Youtube.

These activities have been my favorite way to kill time. I still enjoy tuning out after a long day of classes to watch Grey's Anatomy over and over again.

My parents do not like it one bit. They try to get my attention, but it ultimately fails because I can't seem to take my headphones out of my ears. I'm never listening.

Thinking about this more, I wondered if I'm more attached to my headphones than I think I am. As I was looking through my Instagram and Facebook, I saw a pattern.

I always had a pair of headphones on. Over the years I've had different pairs for different seasons, but I had a set of headphones attached to whatever phone I had at the time. It had become a staple of my everyday outfit.

In high school, I was always recognized for the headphones around my neck.

I wondered if I could challenge myself to go one day without my headphones to see if that was possible.

It turns out, it is. It's just really hard.

For this challenge rules, I set the duration of this experiment from midnight to midnight for not using my headphones.

That meant I went to bed without my headphones in playing music. That was the first thing I noticed. I had been using music to fall asleep ever since I was a kid. For the first hour, I felt like I could hear everything going on around me. Every noise and every little bump in the night went noticed.

I managed to fall asleep and slept well through the night.

When I started the challenge the next day, I was instantly off. I didn't listen to Childish Gambino on my way to my first class for the day. I didn't sit with my headphones and watch my new news channel when I ate lunch.

I tried throughout the day to keep my usual music listening habits and video watching the same. Still, it was somewhat uncomfortable.

It was uncomfortable; it was something that threw me off. I never would expect that.

I'd be sitting in my dorm, watching something on my phone and I would think about putting my headphones in to drown out the longboarders and honking of horns in the street.

I felt like my entire routine was completely thrown off. One little pair of headphones seemed to shift everything.

The entire day wasn't as terrible as I'm making it out to be. There were some high points to this experiment. I am a person who always seems to have a lot going on in my head. But, since I put my headphones back in their case, I kept my phone in the bottom of my bag and picked up a book.

After my experiment was over, I wondered why I wore my headphones so often. Is it because I want to stay away from everything or I like having them around? Considering it's been less than 24 hours since I had this experiment; I don't know why I have them on me at all times.

When I was walking around campus, it was a peculiar sight to see so many pairs of the pre-packaged apple headphones.

Now, I'm trying to unplug and put my phone down for a change. This week I've been implementing a new thing called 'quiet time.' I take a minimum of one hour to put my phone and headphones down and do something else. To make sure I don't cheat, I use the app called "Forest."

Based on the Pomodoro Technique for productivity, it's a timer application for your phone, with a twist.

You can set the timer anywhere from 10 minutes to two hours and once the timer starts you start to grow a little tree. If you put your phone down and don't exit out of the app, you raise a happy small tree. If you exit the app for even a second, your tree dies.

If you want to try this technique, Forest is available on iOS app store for $1.99. I don't usually pay for applications, but this is worth it.

You don't have to use the Forest app, you can set your pre-installed timer on your phone, and it works just the same.

This experiment was the first, but it won't be the last.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
