Poetry On Odyssey: If They Use 'Babe' As A Weapon, It's Domestic Abuse

One thing that's always bothered me is seeing how so many of my friends stay with people who would purposely harm them. All because out of their own kind nature they're forgiving and realize people make mistakes. While this may be the case, this is no reason to keep forgiving what's causing you pain. Especially when you deserve much better than what you are receiving. This is a poem I wrote on the issue entitled:

This Is Not A Love Poem

"Babe…

I know I messed up but I love you so much"

"Babe…

I just want to take care of you"

"Babe…

You complete me, without you, I'd die"

"Babe...

I just want what's best for us"

"Babe…

It's not you I don't trust, It's them"

"Babe…"

"Babe?"

"If you love me you'll…"

This is not a love poem

It's funny how one word can make us feel so loved

It's funny how that one word…

masks even the harm that comes with thereof

People hear these every day

And stay with the ones who they feel love

When love is the bait on the lure

that ensnare them from above

Chasing after something

After someone that doesn't dare

They toy with emotion constantly

Making you think they care

Like magic words

they taunt them

Repeatedly they flare

Off with words of drawing

So you just see them standing there

and feel…

Alone

Because you don't want to be what's known as "Difficult"

You don't want to be labeled "insane"

So you sit constantly taking

and absorbing

all the pain

It doesn't always take a fist to harm

someone you adore...

Sometimes it's just the words

That rattle them to the core

Love is like a battlefield

But it never has to be a war

Babe doesn't always mean I love you

Sometimes it's just you have something…

they want more.

This poem isn't about one personal experience, but rather multiple experiences. There's not just one simple way to identify this torture. There are many other things people do to try to control those they're with. It sickens me, however, that we live in a world where people often let this go by unnoticed. People rather accept the pain that is given to them because it's so easily believed they deserve it. They accept this feeling of "love" thinking that this is the only way they could get it. It hurts to know that many feel so beneath their worth all because some would rather take advantage of one another than to love one another. I can't honestly think of one person who wouldn't like to be happy and see those around them feel the same, so it really leaves me distraught that this is so common. I hope to live in a day where this is a thing of the past. Don't you?

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
