Lets get a couple things clear, computer scientists aren't those people who you call when your computer does weird things, or when you're having issues connecting to the WiFi. They also aren't those weird people that sit by themselves, staring only at their computer screen and not talking to anyone. And no, most of us did not begin coding before we could talk.
People also think that by majoring in computer science, all you will be doing is coding. While coding is a good portion of it, that's not all that computer science has to offer!!
Basically, any preconceived notion of what or who you think a computer scientist is, is WRONG!
So, why should you major in computer science? What can the major offer you? Why is it worth it? Well...
1. We are problem solvers.
As a computer scientist we are faced with new problems everyday, some more difficult than others. Computer science teaches you the different approaches to solving problems. You learn how to logically think through a problem, finding the most efficient way to solve it.
2. It teaches you the art of determination and never giving up.
Error is the worst word you can see as a computer scientist. Sometimes you'll be working on a program, try and run it, get a couple errors, go back and fix the errors, only to get about 30 more errors pop up. Yes, there is screaming and sometimes tears, but the feeling you get when you see no errors and the program running correctly is so worth all the time, effort, and decoding that took so long to do, makes you want to do cartwheels around the computer lab.
3. You basically own the internet.
Do you use Facebook? Instagram? Twitter? Pinterest? Who do you think designed these apps and websites? You guessed it, computer scientists! It is so beyond cool to learn how to design these things that are literally used every single day.
4. Women are attempting to shatter this predominately male field.
I don't know about other women out there, but if a man can do it, I always try to do it better. Only 18% of women graduate with an undergrad degree in computer science. So what does this gender gap mean for women? It means that we are a hot commodity to employers that are trying to diversify their employees.
5. You can never get bored.
This field is forever changing because technology is forever changing. Right when you get good at one programming language, another one is developed!
6. Job opportunities are endless!
By majoring in computer science, you can almost work in every field. Medical, economic, sports, you name it, you can find a job! Not to mention, this will make your parents really, really happy!
Computer science has so much offer. It's a truly rewarding field that will keep you on your toes and always learning something new. I highly recommend that you take an introduction to computer science course and just see how cool it really is!
