Another holiday has come and gone. Easter break is far too short, but at least we have a break. This break is a signal to worn out college students that summer is on its way. We are so close just five short weeks and we will be free; however, the significance of this break is more than just taste of summer. This break is actually very important, it should be the biggest deal in your life. I am sure you can see where this going, but I’ll say it anyways. This significance of Easter break is our lord, Jesus Christ overcoming death and freeing those who believe in him from the consequences of our sin. So, I guess you could say Easter is kind of a big deal. Realizing just how big of deal this is, it is important that we live with an Easter mindset every day.
Most Christians would agree that Easter is an important holiday and an essential part of our faith, but all too often people forget just how significant the crucifixion and resurrection truly are. I feel like as Christians we become so accustomed to hearing the stories that we do not take the time to sit and really listen anymore. Ask any Christian anywhere and they can tell you the story; they could probably even go into a lot of detail about the significance of this story. However, we do not tend to live in a way that represents all that story did for us.
Let’s begin by focusing on the story itself. God created his son and sent him into the world with the sole purpose of providing a way for our sins to be forgiven. Then his son, who was both fully human and fully God, took on the sin of the world when he was nailed to the cross. To help put this into perspective, imagine your own guilt over one sin multiplied by every other sin you have ever committed then multiplied by every person who is, has, or will live. All this sin combined together weighed on Jesus as he hung on cross after being betrayed and beaten. Then Jesus did the impossible and overcame this sin. Jesus was raised back to life and all scripture was fulfilled. So yes, what Jesus did for us is immeasurable and is something that we should be grateful for every day.
Let’s take this truth one step further. We should be grateful, but that gratitude should be so great that it should be seen in every aspect of our life forever. Because Christ died for us, we should live in way that is holy and pleasing to him. We should let the love of Christ define who we are and how we live. It is important that God’s grace be remembered and it is even more important that God’s grace be shown. Jesus did not just die for his followers, he died for everyone and what everyone to know this truth so they can live in relation with God. The Easter story should be a story that defines our lives and how we live on more than just one holiday, but every day.
