The election is over - so the biting remarks and demonizing of supporters on either side is also over, right?
wrong.
I'm not going to say who I voted for, or whose ideals I support more, because this isn't about that. This isn't about me bragging about one side winning or crying about the other side losing. This article isn't about my political views; it's about how toxic this election has made many people.
Facebook is still filled with vitriolic posts and lamenting comments about how horrible it is that Trump won and how Clinton would've been a much better president, or hateful, demeaning posts aimed at supporters of both the winner and loser. There is so much hate against people's opinions. Scrolling through my feed, all I see is post after post after post about how people have ruined our country by voting for Trump - by giving an opinion.
There are many people right now saying that all Trump supporters are evil and racist and homophobic. This is not true. People vote for the people they support for a reason. Instead of attacking people's views, we should be trying to solve the problems that people believed Trump will change. Instead of attacking people, we should listen to them, understand their reasons.
We should also hope. There really is a lot of things to hope for. I have hope that we can start a discussion about issues that caused Trump to be elected, because obviously a small majority of our country felt that he would help them with their problems. We don't know what those problems are because of the hate that gets thrown around, and we can't fix the problems if we don't listen to those who have them.
There is also hope for our generation, because we can change things. We can change the way presidential debates happen, we can change the presidents who get elected, and we can change the hate. But we have to start with dialogue instead of arguments, and understanding even with disagreement. To change the hate, we have to start with love.
