Ever since we were little girls, one common idea was instilled into our minds as the kindergarten version of ourselves grew up watching Disney princess movies. But, even as we’ve gotten older, romantic movies have allowed us to envy the love stories portrayed by an array of characters on almost every big screen. This idea is commonly referred to as “happily ever after,” yet this fantasy is far fetched in comparison to the reality that the millennial generation has seemingly created.
You see, our four-year-old selves had full heartedly envisioned our prince charming sweeping us off of our feet later on in life. Yet the harsh reality that I’ve unknowingly realized is that most males have lost what it truly means to value and respect a woman. We’ve watched these movies at a young age showing us that in order to live a happy life, we must have a significant other to share it with. But I say, the hell with that.
I’m not saying that all guys are horrible, or that you can’t fall in love with someone and live “happily ever after.” I’m saying that you don’t always need a man in your life to live your life to the fullest. You don’t need to constantly depend on him when he barely gives you the time of day or when deep down you know you love him more than he loves you. Love yourself enough to walk away because no one should be given the power to make you feel unworthy of yourself. If he doesn’t see your value, well then that’s his loss because you’ve now opened the door for someone else to come into your life that will love you unconditionally.
To all of the females in this world that are dreaming about their “happily ever after,” you must know that it’s okay to choose yourself first. It’s okay to go through high school or college without a boyfriend because that just shows how much of an independent woman you really are. Travel abroad, spend more time laughing and doing reckless things with your friends, Netflix and chill by yourself and never settle for anything less than you deserve. Some people are able to find their perfect match, someone who will risk their life to save them but that doesn’t mean that at this exact moment you must find the same. As for right now, fall in love with taking care of yourself and smile because you just never know who can be falling in love with your smile.
