We Can Be Ungrateful No Longer

Generation Y has lost focus of what is truly important.

We Can Be Ungrateful No Longer

To be blunt, we are a very ungrateful generation as "Generation Y" or the people more commonly referred to by the name "Millennials." Here, I'll focus on the later end of this generation by looking at the people who are currently in college. These are the people, including myself, who I see this problem in. Our lives never seem to quite measure up to what we want them to be, and the same can be said about our day to day actions. College tuition is high, it's very hard to juggle class and work as well as social interactions, it really stinks not to have a lot of money, and its tough to figure out "how to adult" as we like to joke about. That being said, we all seem to look past all of the great things we do have, and how great and easy all of our lives are in comparison with how they could be.

Very rarely does anything truly irritate me unless it affects my life in some way. It can be argued that others' appreciation of what they have has no control over my life and what I do with it. This is a true statement. The only thing that really gets under my skin is when I witness it through written, oral or digital communication. I cannot stand to see anymore.

Before I go any further at all I have to acknowledge that what I am about to say, and what has already been stated, is not below me at all. I don't write this looking down on anyone. As I've said before, I am a part of this group. I do it just like everyone else. We all have different levels of this, as is the nature of anything human, and some are better or worse than others. As to do my best to not call anyone out specifically, I'll use all personal examples to illustrate my points. Each of the following quotes are thoughts I've had or said, and I know most or all have been in your minds as well. It will be up to you to be honest and identify which ones may be prevalent in your life.

"Classes are so hard and take up all my time. How is one person supposed to handle all of this?!"

I will put this argument to rest very quickly. I choose to look at this from a time standpoint. The only comparable points in life are high school and the time you will spend as an employed adult. In high school, the average day is roughly seven hours. On a typical week, this means that you are at school for 35 hours a week. Furthermore, even though we think of a typical work week as 40 hours, a study conducted by Gallup.com shows that the average work week for adults pushes 47 hours! Now let's break down college life. A study conducted by USA Today found that the average time spend outside of class for students is 17 hours. This accounts for studying, homework and anything else academic outside of class. Let's assume that all students take a pretty average 15 credit hours per semester. This equates to 10 one-hour and 15 minute class sessions. That is 12.5 hours a week. Added together, that equals 29.5 hours, less than high school even! Of course the material is harder, but our brains reach maximum development in the mid to late 20s, meaning that our brains grow to face each increase in difficulty. Overall, college seems to be the least demanding on your watch.

"I'm so broke. I don't have money for anything!"

Even though you might think this is true, it's really not. Most likely, your parents either still support you financially, or your burden has been postponed with student loans. This means that at most you must pay for sustenance and all of the rest of your money is for either saving to pay for college later or just spending money. There are hundreds of part-time jobs near any college for this purpose, and even adding 10 hours a week would support you as well as not putting you in too much of a time crunch. Nearly 71 percent of undergrads in the nation do this, so you can too.

"Too many/few people want my time. What do I do?"

With this question comes one of the tougher truths of life. It seems to never fail that when you have a full plate is also the same time all of your friends want to hang out. This also goes the other way in that it there are times that you have nothing, and may be lonely and are completely left to yourself. Don't fret. This will be your entire life. Sometimes you have to say no, and others you have to just do something for yourself.

"Everyone else seems to have so much fun in college. Why isn't that me?"

To be fair, I've had plenty of good times in college thus far. That being said, everyone has times when it seems like you're the only one who's struggling while everyone else is living it up. This is normal, just as it is in every period of our lives. Without giving a cliché metaphor, we all have different problems we deal with at different points. Just because it doesn't seem like your day, don't give up hope. That will change very quickly. Also, be mindful of this when it seems like you're on the top of your game. Someone around you might need a little boost over the hump of what they're dealing with.

I could list quotes all day, but these represent it pretty well. Although I already addressed each individually, those aren't the true points I wish to emphasize. The number one thing I want you to take away from this article is that it could be so much worse and life is pretty awesome. OK, I may sound like a parent just trying to put it in perspective, but that's basically what I'm doing. Think about this: You're currently enrolled in college. That bests almost 43 percent of all people our age. They are currently working and providing for themselves while you study to get a great job in the future. Most likely you woke up this morning and didn't wonder how you would afford breakfast or keep the roof over your head. One in nine people do. You probably have at least a handful of friends that would give anything for you, and if you think not, you'd be surprised. Also, you probably have a job, something that some adults that have to support themselves don't even have. Additionally, perhaps you pay all of your bills, but most college kids do not. That's another burden that your parents take off your hands. Life is pretty good when you think about it.

I wrote this because I believe in appreciation. There are a million things that could go wrong every day in my life that don't, and I'm blessed to have what I have. I don't like seeing others being ungrateful of what they have. I believe that all I have is a gift from God, but even if you don't believe this you must realize those things and those people that actually make your life awesome in comparison to others. Thank your parents, thank your professors, thank your friends, thank your boss, thank whoever you need to. Without them, you wouldn't have school, work, family or the love of friends, and that would be a pretty tragic life in my opinion.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
