In the wake of the disaster in Las Vegas that has proven that we are unequivocally numb to these disasters, we have managed to gloss over the fact that on that October night there was another shooting. While this shooting may not have gathered as much attention as its predecessor it is still important in the arguments that have been raised recently. Three people died in Kansas the other night and their lives have come to mean less because nearly sixty died in Las Vegas when the circumstances were so similar that it hurts.
It was late in the night, around 1:45 for those in Kansas, and people were heading home after their concerts or trips to the bar or just hanging out with their friends when the shots were fired. There was an estimate of twenty shots fired and at least five of them made contact with people.
This piece of news was glossed over on almost every social media site. It seems to have a max of maybe one hundred words anywhere while there are multiple articles on each site dedicated to the Las Vegas incident. The reason this is so outrageous is that both of the people who fired the guns had the same intentions yet the one who is identified and dead is the one getting all of the attention while the one who is still out there has not gotten anything. There's no description to go off of or anything circulating in the media about it.
~Sigh~ Maybe they have been caught but there isn't anything online about it. Every time I think there might be an article about it I find myself looking at yet another article surrounding the Vegas shooter.
America is supposed to be a land of free people and a home to those who are brave, is it not? It says so in our national anthem for goodness sake. Yet, here we are forced to live in fear because our second amendment protects our right to bear arms and own weapons that in no way, shape, or form are meant for self-defense. No, this isn't an article dedicated to removing the second amendment and taking away that right but we need to change something. No matter what we do bad people are going to try to do bad things. Does it not make sense to make it harder for them to do those said bad things?
People die every year because we fail to correct our own mistakes. We make these bills, we fight these bills, we try to make everyone happy, the bills fail to do what they needed to in the first place and then we repeat.
The longer we wait, the longer we stall, the more people are going to lose their lives and eventually there are going to be so many people who have died that we are going to turn on the TV and see the news that four- hundred people were shot down, killed, and our responses will be a universal "nothing we could do" and "our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. It isn't right to just sit here and watch what's going on. It isn't right for any of us to not take action and actively try to better the nation for ourselves and the future generations because one day, like it or not, if we continue on this current course it will be us on the list of victim names, or it will be our kids or our friends or our mothers, fathers, spouses, etc.
We're all running out of time, aren't we? One more day is another day closer to the day we die, to the day someone else will die or could be killed. We don't know when that day will be, only that it will happen. For so many people it was a few days ago and that could've been avoided if we'd done something after Florida's incident. It's time to stand for this and do something. We cannot stand around any longer. We cannot allow more lives to be wasted at the hands of radicals who use our own words against us and kill us while waving the laws we preach to protect in our faces.
No, we have not only become numb to the mass murders around the country. We have not only become desensitized to these killings but ignorant of what they may mean for us and how we should be dealing with them. We've become neglectful of the lives around us and of our own. We send our thoughts and prayers when many Americans no longer worship a god. We forget that sometimes actions speak louder than words and our actions may seem small now but one day they may become louder than the action of pulling a trigger.
