With fall classes starting back, rush, move in, and changing my major all at once you could say I've been really stressed. And I'm sure many of my peers feel the same with juggling a job, classes, and a number of other things. With so much going on I feel like I've had little time just to sit and relax or even take the time to take care of myself. However, I know that you're so much more productive when you give yourself a chance to decompress and breath. College and life, in general, can be stressful and time-consuming, but here are some easy ways to give yourself a break.
1. Look Into Essentials Oils
I had never even thought about using essential oils until I got to college, but they are amazing at helping you de-stress. Before I go to bed at night I use them to help me sleep, and I also just use them if I happen to have a really stressful day. It's also cool that different oils help with different things. It may sound crazy, but I promise you will notice a difference once you start using them.
2. Quiet Time
I know how hard it is to give yourself even 15 minutes to relax and breath. Often we spend these breaks on our phone, watching Netflix, or doing some other activity that entertains us. However, just 15 minutes of serious quiet time (and I mean no phones, no noise, no anything) can help you so much. It gives your brain some time to relax with no stimulation whatsoever, and you'll feel so much more refreshed when you get back to your work.
3. Take a Cup of Tea
No, I don't mean sweet tea. A cup of green tea or lavender tea is proven to help those who suffer from anxiety. I know that coffee and caffeine seem great when you have a lot to do, but you will crash and when you do, it will hit you like a train. Tea is a lot more soothing and plus there are tons of different kinds to try. You're sure to find one you like. The only downside -- it stains your teeth.
4. Exercise
Take a run... or a walk if you're like me and running it's not your thing. Exercise is a great way to relieve stress and with most campuses exercising at the gym or walking around the super large grounds is not hard to do. Finding the time might be difficult, but if you plan it into your schedule you'll find it's very doable. Saying you're going to go at a certain time every day will really keep you on track. Of course a spur of the moment walk here and there is great, too.
5. Do Something that Makes you Laugh
This one might seem a bit strange, but laughter really does improve your overall mood. So whether it's being with your friends, watching some funny cat video, or anything else that gives you a good laugh, make the time for it. Laughter really is the best medicine so give yourself those moments.
These are some super simple ways to destress in college. Managing everything can be mentally taxing which is why it's always important to make an effort to take care of yourself, relax, and just breathe. You'll get through it- I promise. These simple yet effective de-stressors can be beneficial.
