Back in 1972 in Washington D.C. when Richard Nixon was president, a huge scandal had erupted; the Watergate Scandal. It was on the sixth floor of the Watergate Hotel and Office Building that the burglaries took place, documents were photographed, and the telephones were wiretapped.
The Watergate Scandal took place on June 17th, 1972 when burglars, James McCord, Virgilio Gonzales, Frank Sturgis, Eugenio Martinez, and Bernard Barker, broke into the Democratic National Committee’s headquarters. It was Frank Wills, a security guard, that noticed suspicious activity and acted quickly.
Later, all five men were charged with attempted burglary and attempted interception of telephone and other communications. After the scandalous attempt, President Richard Nixon’s administration tried to cover-up all of their involvement.
Today, the purpose of Watergate has never really being revealed but there are countless theories out there as to what the point of it really was.
Originally, the Watergate Hotel had opened before the scandal even happened in the mid-1960s. Luigi Moretti, an Italian architect, was the one who built the hotel. In 2007 however, the hotel found itself closing before re-opening for a second time this past month.
So what has changed? The interior of the hotel got a major makeover. The total cost of the makeover added up to a whopping $125 million. The new interior is nothing but glamorous and sleek.
The goal was to have the interior be updated with a sense of the 21st century while still showing tribute to its original striking mid-century modern appearance. The furniture is sculptural and was made by Italian luxury brand, Moroso.
It was up to New York developer Euro Capital Properties to collaborate with Washington offices of architectural and interior design firm BBGM, to design the guest rooms.
It wasn’t just the building that was remodeled, the staff uniforms also been updated. The uniforms were designed by Janie Bryant. Janie is a costume designer for the television show, Mad Men.
According to the Washington Post, there were reports of the Watergate Hotel still acknowledging its scandalous past in a few humorous ways. Pencils being carved with the words, “I stole this from the Watergate Hotel.” Room keys labeled with, “No need to break in.” A customer service number is incorporated with the date of the scandal. There are also plans to install audio of Richard Nixon’s foreign-policy speeches from 1971 and 1972 into the restrooms.
While the new interior of the hotel is quite remarkable and outstanding, the party that celebrated its re-opening was far from anything different.
Everyone who joined in on this celebration was dressed in their very best. A few of the guests included Bob Dole and his wife, Elizabeth, both former senators, Tandy Dickerson, the current mayor of Watergate and of course the hotel owners were also there, Jacques and Rakel Cohen.
After nine years of the Watergate hotel being closed, it certainly made a huge comeback with its brand new polished looks.
