We all remember the TV shows we watched as children with such fond memories. Nothing can beat the classic 90s cartoons that helped us grow up and taught us major life lessons. Well, thanks to Netflix, you can now relive your childhood whenever you want to. My friend Selena and I had our first Saturday off in weeks, so we decided there was no better way to spend the day than with Chick-fil-A and children's shows!
"The Wild Thornberrys"
Season Two, Episode 25 -- "Black and White and Mom All Over"
Selena and I knew right away that "The Wild Thornberrys" had to be on our list. We realized that we didn't remember many specific episodes of this show, so we just picked the one that had a cute panda in it. When we first started it, I realized that this show was what made me really interested in travel. Selena said that this show really just made her want to talk to animals.
I can't believe that Tim Curry did this show! He literally just makes a fool of himself. Some of the sounds that he makes on this TV show are so funny! He is such a fool, and it's probably one of the best parts of this show.
We also decided that Debbie's fashion sense is ahead of her time! Look at her purple lipstick and crop tops! She clearly belongs in 2015.
This show has a lot more turmoil than we remembered. At one point, everyone was trapped in a ridiculous storm, the parents were almost eaten by a jaguar, and a momma panda bear almost had a tree fall on her. By the end, I was feeling a little emotional, even when the momma found her baby cub. I'm not sure if Selena could keep watching it, though. Donnie was too dirty and no one ever cleaned up his messes, which Selena couldn't get over it.
"Hey Arnold"
Season Two, Episode 7: "What's Opera, Arnold"
We all remember the very lovable football-head and his many adventures at PS 118. I really do think that this show is the reason why I'm so into jazz music -- the back track is phenomenal! One of my favorite episodes of this show was when Arnold and the gang went to the opera on a class field trip. While I have very distinct memories of watching this show when I was home sick from school, Selena didn't remember much of it. Now, Selena is actually an Opera major, so I think her commentary appropriately describes how we felt about the episode.
"Arnold fell asleep immediately!"
"Helga's belting!"
"A car? That's not period appropriate!"
"There's so much to appreciate in this episode."
All and all, we decided that "Hey Arnold" is still a top notch show and very worth watching again. Selena also believes that she might be able to credit her first opera experience to this episode, so she owes a lot to Nickelodeon.
"The Magic School Bus"
Season One, Episode 8: "The Magic School Bus in the Haunted House"
This was easily one of my favorite shows as a child. I thought Miss Frizzle was the coolest teacher ever and I always wanted to go on these field trips. The first thing that Selena and I noticed about this show is how ridiculous Miss Frizzle is! How is she still teaching? Do these kids' parents even know what their children are doing? Did they even have to get a permission slip, or anything? And if they did, would that permission slip say: "My child will be allowed to shrink to the the size of a red blood cell to go inside another student and fix that kid's sore throat?"
Regardless of our newfound concern for these children's safety, this show is still ridiculously cool. Selena and I decided to watch the episode where the students go to a haunted music museum, and the first thing we see is the class practicing their instruments. All Selena had to say was, "This little eight-year-old is the conductor?! She's giving horrible cues!" The longer we got through the episode, the more I realized that this episode taught me pretty much everything I knew about music before I went to college to pursue it.
Selena and I had way too much fun watching this show and making fun of the cheesy 90s slang/fashion. My favorite commentary that we made, though, has to be this interaction:
"Everything is in minor scale in this museum." -- me
"It's because it's scary as f***." -- Selena
What actually goes down when Miss Frizzle proposes her field trip ideas.
"The Powerpuff Girls"
Season One, Episode 12: "The Rowdyruff Boys"
Selena and I were probably way too excited to put "The Powerpuff Girls" on. The theme song started and we both were able to recite the entire thing by memory, and we realized that we were still very attached to this show. We also had a lively debate about which Powderpuff Girl we were. I'm definitely Blossom and Selena is Buttercup (Selena's convinced that it's because of the hair).
The first thing we noticed about this show is that the city is ALWAYS under attack! How can it afford to keep rebuilding? And so quickly! How is their economy doing so well? Most importantly, how can America hop on that train? We also had no idea how violent this show was. It's really quite disgusting! While making the Rowdyruff Boys, Mojo Jojo literally ripped out a dog's tail and made the boys in a toilet. Selena and I also came to the conclusion that the Boys are just like any group of drunk men, because one of their first lines in the show is, "We're the Rowdyruff Boys and we want to fight!"
The only problem that I have with this show is that it doesn't really know where it stands on the feminist spectrum. Sure, it features three badass girls that are able to be little girls and fight crime. But we can't forget that the mayor's secretary literally doesn't have a face and is pretty much all boobs and legs. To stop the Rowdyruff Boys, the girls put on a lot of make-up and flirted with the boys. But other than that, this show is brilliant, and Selena and I are ready to plan a day-long marathon!
