Season 11 of the reality TV singing show, “The Voice” kicked off this past Sunday with a fiery, powerful rendition of Aerosmith’s 1973 epic rock anthem “Dream On,” by this season’s four coaches — Miley Cyrus, Blake Shelton, Adam Levine and Alicia Keys. The powerful performance was dedicated to the late Christina Grimmie, a former contestant who was tragically shot and killed after a concert in Orlando last June.
Alicia Keys opened the performance on the piano and with Adam Levine accompanying with the opening guitar embellishments. The four stars took turns on the vocals, each with solo parts and harmonizing in pairs as well throughout the performance before wrapping up with a powerhouse ending with all the performers belting out Steven Tyler’s iconic anthem.
Levine even nailed Tyler’s seemingly impossible high falsetto note from the 1973 recording.
While we were overall impressed with the entire performance, we can’t help but shed light on the way Miley Cyrus was able to capture the audience with vocals we haven’t seen from her in a long time. The way she entered the stage, clad in a red jumpsuit with her arms spread wide as she sang, “Sing with me, sing for the years; Sing for the laughter, sing for the tears,” brought the performance to a whole new level.
The audience agreed and graciously greeted her with a warm round of clapping and cheering.
After the performance, the screen went black revealing the dedication, “In loving memory of our friend Christina Grimmie,” Fuse reports.
In the past, the show has typically been male-dominated with the coaches, this being the first season with two female coaches. We thought Cyrus and Keys held their own in this performance, maybe even outshining Levine and Shelton, leading us to believe they will be highly regarded throughout the season, potentially coming home with a winning team.
Last week, “The Voice” teased the religious watchers by promoting their new coaches. "Miley's the youthful spirit we've been missing," Levine said of Cyrus.
Shelton shed light on Keys' impressive career and studio craft, saying she "comes from a place, more like a writer, producer.”
In the end, we are excited for the new season and all the “girl power” to come.
The full season 11 premiere airs Monday, Sept. 19 at 8 p.m. on NBC.
