"War Dogs" opened this past weekend and stars Miles Teller and Jonah Hill as childhood best friends reunited who get into the international arms dealing game together. I was VERY excited for this movie to come out for a multitude of reasons: The trailers were great, and gave "War Dogs" a "Wolf of Wall Street" feel. I also love the Miles Teller and Jonah Hill. Hill is an established superstar already, and I love his work, but I was very excited to see Teller, who is a very on the rise young actor (if you haven't seen "Whiplash", you definitely should). The two together just made perfect sense to me, and after seeing the action packed trailer along with my own personal intrigue in the international arms dealing business, I was ready to love this movie... and I was slightly disappointed.
First we'll start with the positives, because there are many things this movie does right. Miles Teller and Jonah Hill are great together, and the subject matter of the movie is undoubtedly interesting to me. There is a very healthy amount of comedy in this movie as well, and I think most of it works very well. The acting is all well up to par, and I'd say the first and third acts of this movie were very enjoyable. But, there was plenty of this movie that I was just disappointed by.
I'll get this out of the way: "War Dogs" was pretty boring sometimes, and that is incredibly disappointing when you look at this movie on the surface. Two young, talented actors playing in a movie about international arms dealers? I should be very into that from start to finish, and I just wasn't. I understand that movies can't be all action, all the time, and that's not what I'm asking for, but when you do have that downtime, I would like the dialogue or the situation they're in to be intriguing. I'm not saying that the dialogue in this movie is bad, because it's not, but I feel like there were times in this movie where better writing could have helped this movie tremendously. Bradley Cooper also plays a role in the movie, and he's pretty good as always, but his character wasn't set up nearly as well as I think it should have been, and just honestly wasn't in the movie enough.
That being said, I liked "War Dogs". The chemistry between Teller and Hill is undeniable, and I had some fun watching the movie, but I just couldn't help leaving the theater wondering what could have been.
Final Grade: B-
