Disney World was the second big project Walt Disney had planned because Disneyland opened on July 17, 1955. Walt Disney World opened on October 1, 1971 but before it did, Walt Disney had an idea for a trial community called EPCOT. This would stand for Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. He said, "it will be a community of tomorrow that will never be completed but will always be introducing and testing and demonstrating new materials and new systems."
There would be controlled planning and design to make this community live-able and to make it a possible way of life for America in the future. In the center of this circular community would be the area of business and commerce. Outside of that area in the center would be the apartment housing. Outside of the apartment spaces would be a recreation land with parks and schools. The last area would be the biggest and would be where the neighborhoods, residential streets, and communal areas are.
The urban center of this whole community would be like a city; cultural, social, and entertaining. There would be shopping area's, theatre's, restaurants, hotels, and offices. The entire center of this community would be completely enclosed. Inside this bubble of urbanization, the weather would be controlled to make it a perfect temperature and to keep out the cold, rain, humidity and any other annoying weather climates that would distract people from shopping or going to fancy restaurants.
There would be a huge hotel at the center of the urban part of EPCOT that would be the centerpiece of the whole community. Under this huge hotel would be the transportation lobby. This would include the monorail station and a place for trucks and automobiles to travel through. The bottom level would be reserved for trucks and supply vehicles. The level above that would be for cars and parking areas for hotel guests and people who were spending the day in the city-like area of EPCOT to go shopping, go to the theatre, or going to a nice restaurant. There would be no stop light anywhere to stop the cars from getting to and from they want to go with no wait. The major way of entering and leaving the community would not be by car or truck, it would be by Monorail and by the Wed-way people mover. These two systems would never stop running even while the passengers are entering and leaving. There would be a place to get on where you would step onto a moving platform that would allow you to get into the Monorail or the Wed-way people mover easier. This way, there would never be traffic to get onto these vehicles and they could move much easier and faster between the small parts of the communities in EPCOT.
This community was made up to become a community that we could model our own communites after. It would not resemble any community that was already established in American and it could be the prototype that we all resembles our lives after which could help us to achieve better communities, economies, and lives altogether.
Although this version of EPCOT did not work out, we did eventually get the EPCOT theme park in Disney World. This theme park was based off the prototype I have explained, but it did not involved people living in the community. If you've ever been to EPCOT at Disney World you know that there are eleven countries represented where you can get food, sports jersey's, drinks, toys, candy, and a lot of other items specific to the country you are at. There are different types of entertainment at each country and characters from Disney movies that are set in those countries will take pictures and sign autographs for people in their respective countries. The countrie represented in EPCOT are Mexico, Norway, China, Germany, Italy, United States, Japan, Morocco, France, United Kingdom, and Canada. There also rides, restaurants, and places to meet characters before you even get to the circle of different countries.
Although Walt's original dream did not come true, the outcome is pretty amazing because it introduces people to all different communities they may not have known a lot about before. You can learn a lot from the journey Walt Disney took to create EPCOT and all of his other inventions because with anything relating to Disney, "dreaming is believing."
