After one of the most tragic season premieres of the Walking Dead, many fans were left speechless.
As usual, we were sitting on the edge of our seats anticipating the next death. The majority of the episode, we were left guessing. Flashes of all the characters were going across the screen, displaying an image of what could possibly be their death. Finally, the horrible truth was revealed.
Glenn, one of the only original characters left from the first season, was brutally killed by the newest antagonist, Negan.
We have made it through other sad and horrible deaths, including characters like T-Dog, Hershel, and Beth; however, this death will be one of the hardest to deal with yet.
We were first introduced to Glenn in the first season as the pizza boy who successfully helped Rick escape from his first big encounter with zombies and reunite him with this wife and son.
After saving Rick, Glenn became a huge role in the series and one of the best characters we have ever had.
What made Glenn so different from the other characters was how he treated humans and walkers. Most of the characters in the show were willing to kill anyone or anything in order to survive, except for Glenn. It took him awhile to be comfortable with killing walkers and seeing them as lifeless bodies, not humans. We can see this transition from the very beginning of the series when Glenn insisted on treating their loved ones as humans, rather than zombies, and having a traditional burial. He wasn't proficient at fighting walkers until about the third season. Glenn was always against killing humans, and he didn't kill anyone until the end of the sixth season, when he felt it was absolutely necessary in order to keep their group safe. During a shoot out in the second season, Glenn felt embarrassed and guilty for not reacting and helping Rick and Hershel; however, he slowly realized that not killing humans was okay, and he held this moral close to him throughout the whole series, allowing everyone to have a second chance.
This helps support the fact that Glenn was also one the most forgiving characters in the show. Despite the fact that Nicholas tried to abandon Glenn, and then attacked and wounded him after disobeying orders, Glenn had every right to kill Nicholas. Instead, he blamed his wound on a bullet that ricocheted off a tree, and allowed Nicholas a chance of redemption. From then on, Glenn kept a close eye on Nicholas, and Nicholas never lashed out at anyone ever again. This is one of the very many examples that showed Glenn's willingness to always forgive others, and to hold his moral of never killing a human.
Glenn held all the traits of a good leader: intelligence, sympathy and empathy, honesty, and selflessness. Whenever Rick was having a breakdown or wasn't around, Glenn was the first person to step up to the plate and lead the group, or help Rick through his problems. He was also one of the few people others would contact if they needed help or just someone to console them. Glenn often came up with successful plans that would help deter attacks from other groups of survivors, walker invasions, and help protect their group. He always put the group before himself, no matter what the situation. He would be the first one to go collect supplies or help defend the group, and he even offered himself up as walker bait on several occasions.
Glenn was also in the longest lasting relationship in the entire series. We watched as he and Maggie slowly became friends, lovers, and eventually husband and wife. Glenn loved Maggie unconditionally, and he never gave up on her or their relationship. He did and would have done everything he could to protect her, and more recently, their new baby. Their relationship was one of the main focuses of the show, and it is disappointing that we will never get to see them have their happily ever after as a family.
Although losing any character to Negan would have been a devastating loss, I wish that it wouldn't have been Glenn. After waiting around for half of the sixth season to see if he was alive, it was hard to watch him die. It's even harder to think of how the rest of the series will turn out without him, especially for Maggie and the new baby. We can only hope that whatever happens from now on, that someone will be there to step up and help fill the shoes Glenn once had.
