A Walk-Through: Union Square

Sounds of a hand pan, little Buddhas, stunning statues, and pigeons too stuffed to walk.

A Walk-Through: Union Square
Gracee Mattiace

April's Walk-Through is a showcase of lively Union Square and Namaste Bookshop just around the corner. The gathering place is always bustling with chess players, New Yorkers and tourists lounging in the sun, and the sounds of musicians showcasing their talents. Miguel Santamaria is one of these musicians, but his instrument is quite unique. Sitting on the ground with hand pan in his lap, Theodore, his friendly dog, by his side, and the smoke of incense disappearing into the air; Miguel's set up draws many listeners. He's been playing drums and percussion for about twelve years and the hand pan for two, and its safe to say he's nearly mastered it. Although he doesn't have any CDs out yet, they are in the works. But it's definitely worth the trip to Union Square to be able to listen and watch his unique talent in person. In addition to being a hand pan master, Miguel is also a glass blower and you can find him on Instagram @formglass.

Epic Creation Myths: Norse Origins Unveiled

What happened in the beginning, and how the heavens were set in motion.

The Norse Creation Myth

Now, I have the everlasting joy of explaining the Norse creation myth. To be honest, it can be a bit kooky, so talking about it is always fun. The entire cosmos is included in this creation myth, not just the earth but the sun and the moon as well. This will be a short retelling, a summary of the creation myth, somewhat like I did with Hermod's ride to Hel.
