Why on a daily basis do many dread getting up? I personally struggle to get up in the morning. About halfway through my morning routine, I think, “What if I could get up a little earlier just to appreciate this, the stillness? To sip coffee and watch the sunrise?” I know I sound like a line from a novel, but we don’t view mornings for the opportunities they can hold.
We see them for the things they take away, sleep. So do people dread mornings because we have had the idea that mornings are these horrible things drilled into our heads or are people simply night owls?
It wasn’t until college that I realized just how amazing the simplicity of mornings can be. Walking to class with the rush of the busy day approaching like a tidal wave, but it breaking away before it can take you under. Taking a moment to sit in the cool and quietness. Listening to footsteps on bricks, where many have walked before us. Admiring the grass from afar, as by 10:15 the sign to not step on the grass will be ignored to occupy hammocks feet above the earth. Smiles pass by as all are still trying to pull awake. Espresso on a continuous loop like the number one hit on the radio. After a while, we grow tolerable. Once upon a time, it would pull us out of the morning haze and get us to pay attention.
Paying attention in class is vital to pass, but what about paying attention to life in between, the small things, those that seem less important and under-appreciated? Appreciation for details seems to be reserved for those of occasion such as a wedding or large event. The planner(s) can tell you what went wrong, what went right, how it ended and how it began, so why not take every day of our lives and treat them with a balanced importance? We get to wake up, live and experience. If mornings never came, how can they turn into days holding adventure? How can they turn into nights filled with memories?
A hope to awake refreshed to the music of the birds, waves and raindrops, to morning dew, the low morning fog and to truly take in the calm serenity of the morning. Too many times we never stop to appreciate we have awoken another day. We've been given a path filled with twists and turns, emerged nose deep in an adventure. So keep your eyes bright for all that lies before, but be aware too that which is under your nose. What it would be to fall in love with the morning, the low murmurs of people chatting, the calm serenity that is the sound of feet on pavement, rain drops on windows and the crescendo of waves crashing. The utter beauty of morning silence, the miles of soft smiles, not in a hurry, just taking in the morning, really appreciating all that it has to offer while we still can. Before the simplicity of the morning becomes nothing more than a desire and hope to be achieved. We have lost the art of slowing down and taking it in. Rather, we speed up, but yet, have no idea what the morning is able to do. For let us not lose the art of enjoying the morning hours, as mornings set your days and days change your life.
