Whenever people used to tell me they were a server I thought how nice it must be to get to keep all that tip money, so this past year when I started working at a restaurant I actually thought I would be swimming in money. Now I'm not going to lie, I do make more than the average college student... but it comes at a cost; I have to deal with the most demonic people on a regular basis. Here are just some reasons of why being a server is not that glamorous.
1. The hours suck. If you are working the afternoon shift expect to be there till 2 am. At this point I'm 90% Red Bull... the other 10% is tears.
2. Most people don't actually tip properly.
3. SIDE WORK. AND ROLL. AND RUNNING FOOD. I don't enjoy any of these things.
4. Parties...especially needy parties.
5. Birthdays, so many birthdays. I cannot tell you how many times I sing the birthday song during one shift.
6. You are on your feet for 8+ hours.
7. Hosts that don't know how to follow rotation. This means you are either getting triple sat, or not having a table for an hour (it's usually both).
8. Teenagers.
9. That one insane manager that has no idea what they are doing.
10. Specials and any kinds of discounts. I really love when I get interrupted during my greeting just to be informed that you have 20% off.
If you can handle putting on a fake smile for hours on end and accept the fact that you will be running around all day the server life might be for you, but don't say I didn't warn you.
