Why You Should Choose To Vote

Why I have decided to vote and why you should too.

Why You Should Choose To Vote

Regardless of who you may want to win the election this year, or if you care at all, I think it is crucial to vote in every election you have an ability to vote in. Even if it seems as though all the candidates do not represent you, just the act of voting shows politicians that the voter pool is increasing and that your vote matters. Sure, your vote alone is small, but if one hundred people have a one percent impact on the outcome, isn't that better than having one person with one hundred percent control over the outcome? Even if you don't support Bernie Sanders, I think this quote is powerful and speaks to our current voter percentage:

"A guy named Adolf Hitler won an election in 1932 ... and 50 million people died as a result ... what I learned as a little kid is that politics is, in fact, very important." - Bernie Sanders

A true democracy tries its best to represent the people who are in it. Voting is one of the best ways to do just that. You have probably read articles similar to this before and already decided where you stand. I urge you to reconsider if you are not going to vote. Please have an open mind if you are not registered, and check out these reasons why you should be voting.

1. It connects you to the rest of the world.

Every time you vote you are contributing your ideas, along with millions of others, to the country. Over time your group of people will be noticed and politics will change what is talked about in order to address what matters to you. This is a rare opportunity to connect to everyone else in ideals and spirit, even if your political views are different.

2. Allows you to complain without being a hypocrite.

If you vote, you are no longer in the realm of complainers and now in the realm of doers. That is a powerful thing to be. It feels good to contribute to politics even in your own small way, and once you've voted, you can share your politics with whomever you please.

3. Politics will represent you.

I know this seems wrong now, but imagine if every single person in the U.S. started voting. Politics and, more importantly, politicians would change drastically. Even if politics does not represent every single one of your values and standpoints, it will at least come closer to being what you want. You don't even need to do research if you don't want to (although it is advised). Just as long as you vote.

4. It is the right thing to do.

There is an obvious ethical value to voting. You may not want to improve the world at all, but if you are like most humans, you do. That is why voting is so beautiful. It is not difficult to do and gratifies that part of you that wants to do something about this world but does not know how to start.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
