Nicki Minaj had a few words for the host of the Video Music Awards, Miley Cyrus, on Sunday Night.
At first, some thought this was just a part of the show; an entertainment tactic. But it went from 0 to 100 very quickly when Nicki called Miley out for her words to the press.
Nicki Minaj wasn't pleased when her videos, "Feeling Myself" and "Anaconda," were excluded from the MTV VMA nominations. In response, she went to Twitter to vent over the praising of slim-bodied, white women in music videos.
It is not uncommon for non-white artists to be thrown to the back when it comes to their artistic contributions to the
"If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year"
— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ)
"If I was a different "kind" of artist, Anaconda would be nominated for best choreo and vid of the year as well."
— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ)
Taylor Swift quickly responded, taking the Tweet to be more so offensive than anything else. She responded by saying,
@NICKIMINAJ I've done nothing but love & support you. It's unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot..
— Taylor Swift (@taylorswift13) The Twitter beef was short lived and the bad blood between the two music artists was quickly cleaned up.
Miley Cyrus, who was interviewed by the New York Times, spoke on Nicki's issues with her video exclusions. In the interview, Miley basically called Nicki Minaj an angry black woman for voicing her opinion.
"What I read sounded very Nicki Minaj, which, if you know Nicki Minaj, is not too kind. It’s not very polite. I think there’s a way you speak to people with openness and love. You don’t have to start this pop-star-against-pop-star war. It became Nicki Minaj and Taylor in a fight, so now the story isn’t even on what you wanted it to be about. Now you’ve just given E! News 'Catfight! Taylor and Nicki Go at It.' ”
In addition to alluding to Nicki acting like an angry black woman, she goes on to say that she did not play the race card right.
"If you want to make it about race, there’s a way you could do that. But don’t make it just about yourself. Say: 'This is the reason why I think it’s important to be nominated. There’s girls everywhere with this body type.' "
