Virginia Tech is much more than a public university. It is much more than a football team or yummy dining halls. It is more than its awards and recognitions. The saying "this is home" rings true to so many of its students, yet "home" isn't exactly the way I would describe it either. It is hard to describe such a monumental place with just words. Coming from a writer, this means the volume of love I have for Virginia Tech exceeds the knowledge of words in my vocabulary.
Although it is hard to describe Virginia Tech by simply using words, Virginia Tech can be described by other senses and feelings. This is what Virginia Tech means to me.
Virginia Tech is a smile, but not just any smile. It is the kind of smile that laughter busts out the corner of your mouth like thunder after a flash of yellow lightning. It is a smile that lasts all day. A reminder on your face that you are happy and alive. It is not just one smile, but thousands. Walking around campus, you see this kind of happiness painted across the faces of many. This kind of smile is a reminder that life isn't perfect, but beautiful.
Virginia Tech is a memory. The kind of memory from the night before that makes you live the night all over again. It is the faces you remember and the moments you will hold on to for the rest of your life. It is a reminder of the friends you could not live without. The times that you wish would have lasted moments longer. These are the memories of stupid young adults breaking their own hearts and at the same time learning to love themselves.
Virginia Tech is a journey. It is a combination of past, present, and future. When you enter this institution you become so much more than you were yesterday. Every day you will learn and grow in and out of the classroom. It is the best decision you will ever make.
So, to those who are just entering Virginia Tech, I cannot tell you what Virginia Tech is for you must learn that answer for yourself. You have the freedom to make Virginia Tech anything you want it to be. This is your time. You will not always smile, but the times you do will make up for the nights spent stressing over Chemistry. You will make mistakes, but never regret them because it is only a memory. These smiles and memories all add up to your distinct journey. I am Virginia Tech, and so are you.
