Vine Stars? Yeah, That's A Thing

In a world where a new app or social media can take a generation by storm on a daily to weekly basis, cough cough Pokémon Go cough cough, it's understandable that many find it hard to keep up with the latest frenzy let alone master it. However, there is a small group of, dare I say, brilliant youngsters and hipsters alike that have found, in all their creative genius, the door to success on many of these apps and platforms. This group is known to many as YouTube or Vine stars. Just google “YouTube Stars” and a whole list of pictures and biographies pop up. Though, it may be hard for many, such as myself, to wrap our heads around the notion that people screaming or dancing in front of their phones or personal cameras has made them famous. Nonetheless, these stars have found success and millions of fans doing just that.

YouTube stars I could understand. Jenna Marbles, Miranda Sings, the zillion of YouTube makeup tutorial geniuses and the three amigos Grace, Hannah and Mamerie, have spent years building up their fans by writing and creating bold, new and funny content, attracting a generation of fans—that I could wrap my head around. For ten minutes or so these fresh individuals sit in front of a computer camera a spill out dialogue, skits and tutorials, often times with friends, to produce work that is memorable; often inspiring the mass of young creatives watching. This group, however, paved a road for another group of stars to break out—Vine stars.

I don't know what it is but when I first discovered Vine I was shocked to find accounts already had millions of fans and views, or "loops." I thought this was a relatively new app and was completely baffled that people had already mastered the world of Vine. Vines for those of you who don't know, are six second videos that can range from humor to art and everything in between. You can create your own vines, edit them and add music, as long as the videos are no longer than six seconds. Six seconds, you may think, is an awfully short period of time to entertain someone. Well, according to a Time article written back in 2014, You Now Have a Shorter Attention Span Than a Goldfish, today humans have, as the title gives away, a shorter attention span than a goldfish—your carnival pet can hold it together for nine seconds, while we apparently lose it after eight. Society has become so accustom to everything at its fingertips that we scroll right past something after a mere eight seconds. So the creators of Vine knew exactly what they were doing where they gave Vine creators only six seconds to work with. And what seems likes a Christmas Miracle; people have come up with some very creative and funny content within the limited amount of time. Not to mention those watching have continued to gobble up these short and sweet videos.

I will admit that I have attempted to Vine, and after 22 days of constantly uploading short skits and wits, I'm not famous, but I have enjoyed the process. However to those that are famous, at first I have to confess I wrote them off. Thinking, "Oh yea congratulations on piggy backing off a generation’s ADD." I figured it was easy enough to make a six second video literally anywhere and say stupid things and gather your friends and family to be a part of your skits. But after attempting it, I discovered it's actually quite daunting. Most of my vines are made in the car out pure embarrassment that my boyfriend will look at me puzzled and my family will laugh if I perform in front of them. I mean if you think about it, from an outside perspective it does look odd when I’m yelling or laughing into my phone and there’s no one on really responding… I truly look ill! Also coming up with daily content isn't as easy as I thought. Fitting in a beginning, middle and an end, and possibly a punch line, within in six seconds, takes much more thought than I had anticipated. On a good day I consider myself to be funny. But capturing those moments for the world of Vine has proved to be much more difficult.

So I commend those Viners such as, Nash Grier, Thomas Sanders and Jessi Smiles for achieving success on a platform I was all too quick to brush off. Likely jealousy and confusion were in my way, but in a world of free content...we have to applaud a successful creative for showing the rest of us hopefuls that it can be done. It’s too easy to complain about the odd success of other. Instead we should show our support for the creative way of life. These individuals have shown that with time, commitment and passion being creative can pay off. Not saying all of us, including myself, will find success, but I have sat with my judgements, and think we should rally behind them and see how far this will all go. In the end these quick videos may prove more to the world and future generations.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
