By the point you’ve reached womanhood, there’s a strong chance you have probably been in Victoria’s Secret. You may have even gone in with your mom against your will when you thought bras were “weird.” And this applies to you too, boys. You may have stuck your head in out of curiosity, or your girlfriend followed after their moms and drug you in against your will.
Either way, we’ve all been in that overly pink store with the white and black sleek dressers filled with undies and bras galore. If you’ve ever been in earlier, when the store first opens, you’ll probably notice that each and every one of those panties is neatly folded, and put in ROYGBIV (rainbow) order, and also dispersed by size, and the same is done to the bras as well.
I know this because I currently work at Victoria’s Secret, and I’m the one folding each individual panty and thong – it’s painstaking. However, it’s not in vain.
You may not know this, but organizing them with such detail and by color actually, helps the product sell. The color coordination makes it pleasing to the eye, and the folding (usually) makes it easier to find the product you’re looking for. This makes the customer’s time shorter, and their experience more pleasant, which in turns makes consumers more inclined to buy the store’s product.
I believe this is Victoria’s Secret.
This organizing technique is not only good for selling product, but it’s also good for at-home use as well. I actually put this system to use in my own closet at home. It’s a great space-saver, especially when I don’t have a lot of capacity for my many clothing items in my sorority room that I share with two other girls, which is smaller than a dorm room, I might add.
So here are my helpful hints I’ve learned from my time working at Victoria’s Secret to organize your closet and give your life an organized feel (even if it’s a disaster like mine).
Bras:
First of all, a helpful tip for how to care for your bras is to ALWAYS hook them when you put it in the wash, and the wash should be on delicate. Usually, you’d want to hand-wash your braziers, ladies, but we all know nobody has time for that. Always air dry.
To organize your support buddies, hook them and lay them out with the band on the bottom. Then push them together to the cups get layered under the one in front. Color coordinating them is an option which I like to apply, just because it makes it easier to grab and go.
Shirts:
If you have a tiny closet like me, you’ll want to get stackable hangers. These are LIFESAVERS. They have hooks on the fronts of them that the hanger in front of it can hang on, leaving space for more clothes (yay!). These are available at Bed, Bath, and Beyond for $4 for a set of 10.
Consumers’ number one motivation to buy clothing items is the color. Therefore, when choosing what to wear, your decision is mainly based on color too. That’s why I organize these stackable hangers by color. I tend to put all the blacks together on a set, then all whites, and all reds, etc. It makes waking up in the morning and getting ready that much easier!
Pants:
Before my time at Victoria’s Secret, I also worked at Hollister. It was here that I was forced by the “jean wall” (a wall of literally hundreds of jeans that got messed up every 20 minutes) to learn how to properly fold jeans and saving space doing so.
To do this, you want to fold the pants in half at the button. I usually fold it so the front of the jeans are showing, because that’s usually the distinction from jean to jean, considering most of them are around the same hue of blue. Then, you do a ¾ fold from the bottom of the jeans to about the knee area on the jeans, then fold the top over it.
When putting them into drawers, I usually alternate from the knee-fold facing me, to the tops of the jeans facing me. This is because I’ve found that the tops of the jeans are thicker because of the belt loops and such, and when they are all facing the same direction, one side tends to bulk up and tilt the jeans, making them uneven, which makes the drawer hard to close.
Voilà! Now your closet is pristinely organized like Victoria’s. Hopefully, this will make your closet life easier and everything more accessible.
