I turned 19 this year. As usual, I received so many beautiful gifts that I treasure (and believe me, I love expensive things). After my party that night, I laid in bed and scrolled through Facebook to thank a record-breaking number of people for wishing me a happy birthday. I then scrolled through my texts that day. I didn't realize until then just how many people wished me a happy birthday --complete with long paragraphs, lots of hearts and other emojis. I replied to all of them, and I was sure to say, "How are you?" at the end of every message, which sparked a conversation with most people who had contacted me.
I was taken aback by the kindness of people I barely even knew. This was my first birthday out of high school, and many friends who I had lost contact with reached out to me. I almost felt my heart growing.
My birthday this year made me come to a cliché, yet true, revelation: the most valuable gift you could give anyone is your time. Why, you ask? Because time is what life is made of. All of my friends, and even acquaintances, decided I was worth contacting that day, and that in itself is heartwarming. After my birthday passed, my self-esteem rose and I thought very positively of myself.
I am so thankful for everyone in my life. I hope people understand how much just a little text or phone call can do to put a smile on someone's face. The best part is that all it takes is just a little bit of your time. It's priceless!
