Every year on February 14, I find myself feeling rather annoyed with all of the hearts, flowers and teddy bears plastered all over Facebook, Instagram and other social media. This isn’t because I’m jealous, it's actually quite the opposite. I’ve never been the girl to want flowers on Valentine’s Day or any other day. I see Valentine's Day as a day that people make up for not showing their loved ones they care on a daily basis. This probably isn’t true for everyone, but the way I see it, a day dedicated to love is unnecessary if you’re showing the people you care about how much you care everyday.
Everyone shows people they love them in different ways. Some are into the extravagant type of love and some are more discreet. Just because someone doesn’t show their love the same way as you doesn’t mean they don’t love you. Since everyone shows their love differently, everyone views a holiday based on love differently.
In elementary school, we passed out little valentines and candy to everyone in class, which taught us to expect gifts on this holiday. Valentine's Day as a kid was a fun day filled with candy and hearts, but didn't really have much meaning to me. The idea of love connected to Valentine's Day never really came up until middle school when everyone started dating. This began the idea of having a valentine to receive presents and attention from on this day. Even in middle school the idea of needing a valentine never really crossed my mind, but I saw how upset some people were because they didn't have a valentine.
It’s almost as if being a girl who doesn’t like Valentine’s Day is frowned upon or considered odd. When they’re told someone doesn’t like Valentine’s Day, most people assume it’s because they have no one to spend it with and they’re jealous of people who do. People need to realize this isn’t the only reason. Just because you’re a girl doesn’t mean you have to like Valentine's Day or feel the need to have someone to spend it with. The fact is that Valentine’s Day is just a day and it's okay whether you like the holiday or not.
