While I’ll be perfectly content seeing "Deadpool" this romantic holiday weekend, I recognize that some of you may be seeking other options. So, I present to you some of the best artsy Dallas events that are sure to gather some thank you kisses.
Dallas Theater Center is putting on a production of "Romeo and Juliet." Sure, it's a bit of a downer, but it's the “greatest love story ever told” and whatnot.
You could also see the same story or hear it, rather, at Bass Performance Hall, where the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra will be performing music from "West Side Story."
A lighter love story takes form in Theatre Three’s performance of "I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change." On top of the hilarious show, you can get tickets, flowers, champagne, and chocolate for just $50 per person!
However, the perfect combination of humor, tragedy, and empowerment develops in "The Vagina Monologues." I have no doubt that most girls would be impressed if their boyfriend felt comfortable enough to buy tickets to and sit through this showing at the Art Centre Theater.
If you’re more inclined toward museums, the Nasher Sculpture Center is currently featuring Ann Veronica Janssen’s work. Although minimalist, her tendency to play with light and projections may create the perfect romantic atmosphere.
Are you wishing that you could take your sweetheart to the most romantic city on Earth, but you can’t afford the plane ticket (or the nine-hour plane ride)? Simply check out Gustave Caillebotte’s The Painter’s Eye exhibit at the Kimbell! If you’re as into impressionist paintings as I am, his paintings of Paris are sure to have you feeling some type of way.
If you forgot to pick up your SO a present, head over to the Galleria to do some shopping, ice-skating, and to see their Roaring '20s Fashion Exhibit!
On that note, you can find me in Klyde Warren Park watching "The Great Gatsby" at their annual Hearts in the Park event. Again, it’s probably as disheartening as "Romeo and Juliet," but how can anyone turn down Baz Luhrmann’s fantastic rendition?
A number of movie theaters also have you covered, whether you’re into classics like "Roman Holiday" (Plaza Theatre), "It Happened One Night" (Majestic Theatre), or "Breakfast at Tiffany’s" (Inwood Theater); audience participation in sing- and quote-alongs for "Moulin Rouge" and "Princess Bride" (Alamo Drafthouse); or just newer, epic movies that aren’t even romantic, but are so good that I included them for all of you who haven’t watched them yet like "Mad Max" and "The Hateful Eight" (Texas Theatre). There's something out there for everyone.
For those who are interested in something more scandalous, the House of Blues will be hosting the Dallas Burlesque Festival on Friday and Saturday night (remember to bring your ID, since it’s 18+ for obvious reasons).
Lastly, I give you quite possibly the geekiest thing on this list: Dallas Comic Con Fan Days at the Irving Convention Center. The guest list may not be as exciting as the complete con in June, but it’s bound to be a weekend-to-remember with celebrities like Brent Spiner ("Stark Trek: The Next Generation") and Stephen Amell ("Arrow"), comic book artists, cosplay models, and fan groups like the Austin Browncoats, Tulsa Tardis, and Rebel Legion.
There you have it: 17 options for how to spend your Valentine’s weekend in DFW. That is, if you’re the one who's in charge of planning the evening.
