Why does everyone make a big deal about being single on Valentine's Day? Is it really that awful or do we just think that it is because of the pressure that society puts on us during Valentine's Day? You have to have a significant other to be able to go on a date, to get chocolates, to get flowers, or to get one of those giant stuffed animals...when really, the truth is that you don't have to have a significant other to receive these things. Yes, I understand that it means a lot more when you get it from someone rather than just buying it for yourself, but what's stopping you?
Why do you have to spend it with a boyfriend or girlfriend? There's only one Valentine's Day that I can definitely remember not spending it with my mom and spending it with my boyfriend, at the time, instead. While I enjoyed the date that my boyfriend had taken me on, it honestly felt weird not spending it with my mom. I think it was because her and I would always do something on Valentine's Day and for the first time in about 16 years, that had changed. It has since gone back to just her and I hanging out and doing something and I'm ok with that.
Who cares if you spend Valentine's Day with your mom/dad or just have a friends night, as long as you enjoy yourself, right? I honestly think that it's more fun to spend Valentine's Day without your significant other. You don't have to deal with all the nerves, trying to be perfect or the pressure that goes along with having a date with your boyfriend/girlfriend. We need to realize that it's not the end of the world if we're single on Valentine's Day.
So, buy yourself those chocolates, flowers, or giant stuffed animal. Do a gift exchange with your friends even, but don't let society tell you that you can't celebrate the day like everyone else!
