Living in a fraternity house is hands down the best decision
I have made since I have come to college. I bet if you asked any other guy who has lived in for a year or more at his fraternity house, he would agree. The Delta Tau Delta house, or as we call it, the Delt House, was built over 100 years ago as the Alpha Xi Delta Sorority house. Our house sits on the water wedged between Fiji and the Edgewater Hotel. Only in Madison can you be a college student and have prime lakefront property and views that are worth a million dollars.
The amazing view, dock, and location are among the many reasons why people in my chapter want to live in. The biggest and most compelling reason to live-in is that you get to live with 20 or more of your best friends for a year or more. Unlike many fraternity houses where communal bathrooms and small cramped bedrooms are the norm, the Delt house is much more of a suite and apartment style house. In 2003, our entire house was gutted and renovated to have 10 apartments that either have a single bedroom, two bedrooms, or three bedrooms. Rather than having common bathrooms, each unit has either on or two bathrooms. On top of having our best friends in the same building, we also have to share a bathroom with 1 or 2 other guys.
The apartment style of living is parent proof. Parents love the idea of their child having as much space as possible and as clean of an apartment as possible, therefore convincing our parents to let us live in the fraternity house is usually an easy task. The one downside to having that much space is the lack of a common kitchen. It would be really nice to have breakfast cooked for me everyday, or lunch on a Friday afternoon when I am just too lazy to leave.
Setting aside the lack of a kitchen, the Delt house is the best place on campus to live. I live with 20 of my best friends, and am doing the same next year with almost 30 of my best friends. I can’t imagine continuing college not living in the fraternity house. Moving into 12 Langdon St. was the best decision I’ve made in college and I highly recommend that everyone live in their respective house for a year or more.
