Ranch dressing is the worst topping in the world. "The Last of Us" is not as good of a video game as everyone says it is. I've never watched "Lord of the Rings," the "Harry Potter" movies, or "Game of Thrones" and I don't have much interest in changing that. And worst of all, at least in the eyes of my editor-in-chief, I don't care at all about "Hamilton."
We all have unpopular opinions. Recently, I've been lambasted by my friends for defending the game "Mass Effect: Andromeda", a game that has been panned by many fans and critics. My friends have particularly pointed out that I dislike "The Last of Us", an almost unanimously praised game. They say that I'm just being stupid and that my biases are getting in the way of seeing the games for what they truly are. I don't agree.
I've found in recent days that having an unpopular opinion is getting harder and harder. Granted, some people make careers out of spewing unpopular opinions. They use this as a means of getting attention, drawing potential customers into a brand. Oftentimes, the audience that is so offended actually helps the one that is offending them. Just look at successful businessmen like LaVar Ball and Donald Trump. They've shouted outrageous things to the heavens, and when everyone got mad at them, their brands soared in value. But what if your intent isn't to offend?
I am not generally someone who tries to offend. I try hard to make everyone around me happy, but sometimes, we have differences of views. Particularly, it's hard to be a Republican in college. Honestly, it is. The majority of people are either Democrats or simply liberal. There is not a lot of love for conservative ideals, and the recent election certainly didn't help.
But you have to stand by your unpopular opinions sometimes. I stand by my choice in video games, even if my friends think I'm stupid. I stand by my choice in the movies I do (and do not) watch. And I stand by my political affiliation, even if my party is in shambles currently. More often than not, I see unpopular opinions beaten down by the majority. Regardless of which opinion is right, the majority attack those that have unpopular opinions. So, I say stand up to that. Stand up for your opinions.
But don't close your ears to the other side. Sometimes, we do find out that we are wrong. For example, I finally beat "The Last of Us" over the last week. It took me three years and a lot of patience, but I finally did it. What I found was that the game wasn't as bad as I initially thought. I saw why everyone liked it so much, but I still didn't love it. The game simply wasn't as good as everyone claimed. Still, I grew a fondness for the game that I didn't initially have.
Stick to your guns, but be prepared to put them away as well.
For this week, I would like to recommend the song "Build Your Kingdom Here" by Rend Collective. Recently, I've been going through a lot of hard times, and this is one of the songs that has really helped me through it all.
