I love movies. Watching them, talking about them, reading reviews, during my free time I even search random movies on IMDB and scroll through the "Did you know?" sections. I like to think that I'm pretty open-minded when it comes to the movies that I watch - I'll give almost anything a try if it's on Netflix or a new DVD release in the library that I work at. It doesn't matter if it's 'Stepbrothers', 'The Normal Heart', or 'Spirited Away.' If it's a movie, I'm willing to give it a chance.
That being said, after all of this movie-watching, I have come to develop more than a few opinions about the various films that I have seen. Granted, I am not an expert and would never claim to be, but I have generated a few unpopular opinions throughout my movie watching experience. Here are just a few of the more ostracized opinions I hold (but please only read on if you promise not to hate me afterwards). Cool?
1. Freeform Harry Potter weekends are the worst
Maybe it's my recent addiction to Netflix, but I have developed somewhat of an intolerance to commercials and what is Freeform most known for? Their seven-minute commercials of course! For that reason, I really do not understand the hype around their HP weekends every month. Sure, they play films 1-8 nonstop, but you only get to watch the movies in 10 minute chunks before a commercial blasts onto your screen. So not only does it take four hours to watch a 2 and half hour movie, but they also cut scenes out just to make room for more commercials!
2. Dev Patel made a good Zuko
Before you send me death threats, I just want to make it clear that I
do not think that M. Night Shyamalan's silver screen rendition of "Avatar: The Last Airbender" was a good movie. It completely butchered the storyline of the beloved Nickelodeon cartoon with its rampant whitewashing and grotesque misrepresentation (and mispronunciation) of the main characters. However, I really did enjoy Dev Patel's performance as the disgraced Prince Zuko of the fire nation. Say what you will, but Patel's got quite the acting chops and had the rest of the film been executed properly (and with better makeup prosthetics) I think he could have been a real standout. (Dev's doing pretty well post-Last Airbender though, as he was nominated for an Oscar in 2016 for his performance in the film, "Lion").
3. The live-action "Grinch" movie is terrifying
This movie still gives me nightmares. I know that it's a "classic" and everyone "loves Jim Carrey" and no offense to Mr. Carrey, but his grinch is just a bit too creepy for my taste. Give me the Dr. Seuss cartoon over this madness any day.
4. 'Titanic' is overrated
Don't get me wrong, this movie definitely has its enjoyable moments (and I'm certainly not complaining about having to watch a young Leonardo DiCaprio run around for a few hours) but for what it is, ultimately a tragic story based on true events, the movie's runtime is far too long for my personal liking. No matter how cute certain moments are or how beautiful the scenery is, I can't get through this movie without a sick feeling of dread in the pit of my stomach because you already know that those happy feelings are incredibly short-lived.
And speaking of James Cameron movies that never end...
5. "Avatar" is the worst
Again, this movie's cinematography is absolutely stunning and its incorporation of technology to create the world of
Pandora is a huge feat in itself. But when you really look at the plot, it's essentially "Pocahontas in space", just with a ridiculously long CGI battle that takes up half of the film.
(If you made it through this list, thanks for not killing me.)
