Though I am well-above the target age for Disney movies, I still love them, collect them, and watch them regularly. I adore the popular ones like "The Little Mermaid" and "Tangled" but I also enjoy some of the lesser-known ones that most people don’t seem to be familiar with. Even if they weren’t successful in their day or not widely known now, that doesn’t mean they aren’t worth watching. Here, in no particular order, are some of the most underrated Disney movies and why you should watch them.
1. Pinocchio
Though it has a super creepy part, I always liked Jiminiy Cricket as well as the overall message: always let your conscience be your guide.
2. Dumbo
A touching film about pursuing your dreams, it’s hardly mentioned anymore. The part where Dumbo and his mom said goodbye always brings a tear to my eye.
3. Melody Time
This is technically an anthology film, but nonetheless, most people haven’t heard of it, or really any other anthology.
4. The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad
This film tells the classic tales of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “The Wind in the Willows.” It’s excellent for reviewing these classic tales and getting creeped out by the headless horseman.
5. Lady and the Tramp
If it wasn’t for the famous spaghetti scene, no one would talk about this movie despite the fact that it shows a charming love story between a rascal troublemaker and a sweet princess.
6. The Aristocats
It’s similar to "Lady and the Tramp" except there are cats and kittens involved and takes place in a beautiful Parisian setting.
7. The Fox and the Hound
This was one of my favorites to enjoy as a kid. It teaches us about the idea of friends who come from different backgrounds reconciling their differences.
8. Pollyanna
It’s a shame that this movie is swept under the rug because it has such a wholesome storyline. The title character is also an excellent role model for girls.
9. 101 Dalmatians
Despite the live-action remake, the animated version is definitely not talked about much.
10. The Jungle Book
Perhaps the best things about this movie are the groovy tunes and the rich jungle setting.
11. Pocahontas
Despite the popularity of “Colors of the Wind,” it's faced a lot of criticism for alleged political incorrectness and is often overshadowed by "The Lion King," which came out around the same time.
12. Ice Princess
This movie made me want to buy a pair of ice skates and try my talents on the nearest ice rink, but most people don’t know it exists.
