An (Unofficial) Crash Course For Driving In Hampton Roads

When in doubt, floor it.

A local's guide to navigating the cities.

1. For The Love of All Humanity, Please Don’t Loiter At Green Lights

If you find yourself in the fortunate position of being first to go at an intersection, do those of us in the back a favor and floor it. Every second you waste dawdling at a clear intersection pushes us that much closer to having to sit through light cycle a second or third time.

2. If A Local Waits A While At A Left-Hand Turn, Trust Them.

Don't just jump the concrete median because you think we're taking too long. Left-hand turns are notoriously precarious, and we're used to the weird nuances of traffic in our area. A few seconds of extra time at a turn is a lot quicker than a hospital stay after a t-bone car accident.

3. Roll Down Your Window And Give Lost Drivers Directions...

But not for three city blocks. When you and your lost protégé occupy the only two straight-through lanes, it reduces space for green light flooring, and if it's within 50 miles of a tunnel, it could potentially disrupt the flow of traffic in multiple cities. Toss them your cell phone charger if you must, but don't keep holding up traffic.

4. Don't Drive Slower In The HOV Lane Than You Would In The Regular Lane.

If the speed limit is 65 mph and people in the 55 mph zone are passing us, something is wrong. Drive slower than that if you want to (although I don't know why you'd be in the HOV to start with), but please don't match speeds with another slow driver in the only available passing lane. Say it with me: staggered slowness saves sanity.

5. The Police Won't Give You A Ticket For Driving The Speed Limit.

Driving slower than the speed limit simply because the police are on the road too just makes you look like you have weed in the backseat or kidnapped someone. Own that speed limit like the law-abiding citizen you are, unless you're in Alaska, Colorado, Oregon or Washington; in that case, feel free to speed with weed. It's legal there (no, not that way).

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
