I am proud to be affiliated with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Proud to call myself a Husker, proud to consider myself a part of the journalism school, and now proud to hear that UNL has decided to offer gender-inclusive housing options for students identified as LGBT.
The housing option will now allow students to choose to live with the people they are comfortable with, rather than having to live with the same biological gender because of past limitations.
The availability of gender-inclusive housing is a huge step for UNL. This offer will hopefully reach out to incoming and current LGBT students, making them feel comfortable in an accepting and understanding environment.
Passing this bill gives me hope that the gender-inclusive housing will not just affect the LGBT community, but all of the students of this university. Housing made to make LGBT students more comfortable has never even crossed my mind before and I’m ashamed that it hasn’t. We’re all human. One human deserves to feel just as comfortable with their living situation regardless of what they identify as.
UNL’s new offer is an accomplishment. Providing housing is a successful move toward making the LGBTQA+ Resource Center’s mission statement, “We envision a campus community that supports a safe, inclusive and respectful environment for students, staff, faculty, and alumnae of all sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expression.”
We are progressing as a campus when we take action to challenge ourselves, and all of society, to fight against any form of segregation or exclusion.
I am proud to be affiliated with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
